     SOME   PART   OF   HIM   is   still   disappointed   that   anakin   decided   to   leave   the   order.    he   understands,    to   a   degree,    on   why.    perhaps   he’ll   go   back   someday,    after   having   a   taste   of   another   life.    perhaps   it’s   better   this   way.    there   are   more   things   in   the   galaxy   than   they   can   comprehend.    he   rests   a   hand   on   anakin’s   shoulder   as   they   step   out   of   the   transport.    (   the   absent   weight   of   his   lightsaber   at   his   hip   is   something   he’s   acutely   aware   of.    briefly   he   wonders   if   anakin   feels   the   same.   )

     ❝   karkkahdin.   ❞    he   says,    looking   out   at   the   scenery   of   the   new   planet   they’re   on.    ❝   a   rich   farming   planet.    tell   me   what   you’re   feeling   from   the   people   around   us.   ❞    jedi   teachings   are   for   jedi   only,    as   yoda   has   told   him.    but   neither   of   them   are   part   of   the   order   anymore,    so   it’s   technically   not   a   rule   he   MUST   follow.

“dull,  isn’t  it?”  monotonous  tone  after  monotonous  tone  fills  vaulted  chamber,  endless  arguments  over  useless  procedure  while  the  war  beyond  rages.  “they  go  like  this  for  hours,  sometimes,  just  to  avoid  actually  doing  or  saying  something  of  worth.  i  suspect  this  is  what  the  senate  was  doing  while  naboo  suffered,  arguing  in  circles  solely  for  the  point  of  it.” 

her  nose  scrunches  in  poorly  hidden  disdain,  though  the  corner  of  her  lip  twitches  wryly.  “not  our  friend  senator  amidala,  however.”

     𝐎𝐁𝐈 - 𝐖𝐀𝐍  𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊𝐒  𝐓𝐎  his  son.   (  son  .  .  .   the  word  is  foreign  on  his  mind,   but  he’s  starting  to  realize  just  how  accurate  that  word  𝐅𝐄𝐄𝐋𝐒  in  regards  to  anakin.   the  jedi  was  a  family,   but  not  in  the  𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥  sense.   and  they  certainly  didn’t  use  𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥  words  like  𝐬𝐨𝐧.  )   then  up  to  the  horizon.   he’s  nearing  twenty  .  .  .   he’s  an  adult  and  yet  .  .  .

     gone  is  the  small  boy  unsure  of  his  place  in  the  universe,   and  now  stands  a  man  taller  than  him  now.   taller  and  confident  and  .  .  .   happy,   he  thinks.   when  they  left  the  jedi  he  didn’t  think  they’d  stay  in  one  place  for  too  long---   but  this  planet  .  .  .   they  stayed  first  for  a  few  weeks  to  help  their  relief  efforts  following  a  civil  war.   weeks  turned  to  months  turned  to  a  year.

     ❝  probably  not,  ❞   he  says  with  a  sigh,   ❝  i  just  got  some  intell  from  some  of  my  old  contacts.   tensions  are  rising  with  systems  planning  to  pull  out  of  the  republic.   i  want  to  investigate  .  .  .  ❞

     and  then,   he  adds,   ❝  and  i’ve  heard  an  old  friend  of  ours  has  been  in  some  hot  water  lately.   you  remember  padmé  don’t  you?  ❞

her fingers stilled in his blonde hair, as she peaked over his shoulder. “I am, is that okay?” she asked, maybe he didn’t want his hair braided, after all the braid had once marked his status as a padawan...  though she was braiding the sides of his hair. pulling it back away from his face. “i thought since we’re going to be going down to the lake and swimming with the children ... you might want your hair out of your face while you’re in the water,” she said. “but if you don’t want me to braid it, i can always do something else. or we can leave it loose, it’s up to you.”

SONG OF ACHILLES

     I   AM   MADE   OF   MEMORIES,    anakin   says.    ANAKIN   says.    (   it’s   ANAKIN.    not   VADER.    anakin   anakin   anakin.   )    there   are   tears   on   his   face,    ghostly   as   it   may   be.    when   obi - wan   died    —    when   he   became   one   with   the   force   —   he   didn’t   expect   to   retain   such   LIVING   things   as   emotions.    (   the   jedi   were   wrong.    they   were   WRONG.   )    but   this   is   ANAKIN.    anakin,    who   ended   the   horror,    who   in   the   end,    despite   the   atrocities   he   committed   as   vader,    chose   the   light.    the   memories   of   those   twenty - some   years   must   eat   at   him.

     obi - wan   doesn’t   think.    he   simply   acts.    he   hugs   him,    tightly,    refusing   to   let   go.    anakin.    how   many   times   has   anakin   apologized   now   since   he   joined   him   in   the   force?    falling   to   his   knees,    apologizing   over   and   over   again.    obi - wan   is   not   in   the   position   to   EXONERATE   him   of   everything   he’s   done.    there   is   no   redemption.    but   there   is   hope.    there   is  always   hope.    and   anakin   chose   love.    and   maybe   now   the   idea   of   leaving,    forever   into   the   force,    not   as   an   individual,    doesn’t   sound   so   bad   anymore.

     now   that   anakin   is   back.

     anakin.

     ❝   i   cannot   forgive   you   of   all   your   acts,    anakin.    but   i   can   forgive   you   of   what   you   did   to   me.    i   forgive   you.   ❞

BIRTHDAY

     TRUTHFULLY  OBI - WAN  HAS  never  been  one  to  give  his  birthday  much  thought  since  his  youth.   but  .  .  .   well,   with  anakin  around  he’s  been  more  or  less  FORCED  to.   he  smiles,   politely  so,   and  takes  the  wooden  carving.   he  runs  his  fingers  over  it,   admiring  the  craftsmanship.  

     ❝  thank  you,   anakin.   this  means  a  lot.  ❞   he  laughs,   ❝  i’m  getting  so  old.   i  fear  i  might  have  a  full  head  of  grey  hair  by  next  year.  ❞

     SO  ANAKIN  HAS  TOLD  him  at  last.   a  part  of  him,   a  LARGE  part  of  him,   tells  obi - wan  this  is  his  fault.   that  anakin  did  what  he  did  on  tatooine  because  he  wasn’t  there.   because  he  didn’t  listen  to  the  underlying  worry  in  anakin’s  voice  when  he  told  him  he  was  having  dreams  of  his  mother.   and  it  all  comes  crashing  down  .  .  .   it  makes  more  sense,   now,   why  anakin  behaved  the  way  he  did  those  days  prior  to  the  republic’s  fall.

     it’s  because  he  didn’t  want  a  REPEAT  of  his  mother.

     the  men,   the  women,   the  children.   his  throat  is  dry.   he  knew  it  he  never  should  have  let  the  council  push  that  mission  on  him.   he  wasn’t  READY.   but  no,   he  cannot  dwell  on  his  own  failures,   he  must  focus  on  anakin,   as  he  always  does.  

     ❝  you  can’t,  ❞   he  says  with  a  sigh.   ❝  there  is  no  RIGHTING  A  WRONG.   not  really.   you  can  try  to  spend  your  life  atoning  for  your  mistakes  but  it  will  never  fix  the  wrong.   it  can’t  fix  what  you  did.  ❞

     he  recalls  words  that  he  grew  up  with,   words  qui - gon  use  to  tell  him,   ❝  but  you  are  more  than  your  worst  act.   and  you  are  more  than  the  worst  thing  ever  done  to  you.  ❞

     ❝  ANAKIN  YOU  KNOW  THAT  someday  you’ll  have  to  do  something  other  than  interrupt  my  lectures.  ❞   it’s  said  with  a  fondness,   hiding  ben’s  irate  mood  under  familiar  teasing.   those  first  few  years  after  shmi’s  death  and  his  discharge  were  TENSE  and  full  of  misunderstandings.   but  .  .  .   all  things  considered,   he’d  say  he’s  rather  lucky  now  that  they  became  all  the  more  closer  for  it.  

     ❝  and  don’t  you  have  to  go  pick  your  ahsoka  up  from  school  soon?  ❞   he  bunches  his  notes  together,   and  grabs  the  quizzes  stacked  at  the  edge  of  his  desk  after  staring  at  them  like  they’re  the  enemy.   it’s  not  anakin’s  fault  he’s  in  a  mood  today,   so  there’s  no  reason  to  snap  at  him  for  doing  what  he  always  does.
