Catching one of the other in a vulnerable state and lending an ear or a shoulder (may or may have shaped their future interactions ;})

Falling into that routine of banters and insults that usual friends do, but they cross the line when a flirty back and forth was thrown around somewhere in between those jabs of insults

Nobody knows but they have each other's contacts/numbers saved just because.

They each know what makes the other vulnerable, they know what would consider be below the belt, but it never is brought up or come up when being rivals, They didn't need to use it to their advantage, never.

Being in each other's personal space to annoy one another, but it became so common it just was a norm.

Having their own nickname for each other, only for each other.

One of them sent an anonymous gift just to try to mess with the other's mind but when they saw the sheer joy it brought, it just kept coming, gifts, treats, small trinkets, just to see their rival's joy they barely show to them.

One drunken/high off meds night and a phone call sprouted their 3 am calls occasionally. They didn't know who to call.

Mellow drinking nights together.

crashing at each other's place like they own the dang place to annoy one another, then it turned to stealing each other's stuff to inconvenience them.

Their actual friends pointing and calling each other out when they witness one of the banters/scenes above and then them denying everything.

Defending each other to their actual enemies, before escalating to a fight with each other having their backs.

When there's absolutely no one else to call to pick them up. their rival is there with a single "Please come get me"

Almost always bumping into each other when going out during grocery shopping, watching a movie, or mundane stuff that one of them just hits the other up when they're going out. Then realizing they're hanging out, more than with their actual friends.

"Are you ok? do I need to reassemble their face?

"Hey! Hey! Watch it!"

Them just staring down/glaring at the antoganist while they let their protagonist handle it because they know theor protagonist can handle their shit, they're just more on the intimidating and dark glare/stare, just daring the protagonist to try something.

"Come on, I know you've got some balls in ya, but if ya wanna keep 'em you treat them with caution"

"Oh I'm watching you. Be very careful with what comes out of that mouth"
