Modern AU Akon/Kira (Akira)

«— Smoking is bad for your health, Doctor. Aren’t you supposed to be lecturing me?

— Right now, I’m much more concerned about how confidently you’re pulling on my tie.»

I really love my idea for a Modern AU, specifically centered around Mayuri’s division.

In my mind, he runs an illegal transplantology operation that involves everything from harvesting organs and selling them to various hospitals to ruthless experiments. He himself works at a prestigious hospital, seen by everyone as a model employee and a leading light of medicine.

Essentially, Mayuri is a "father" to Akon; he took him from an orphanage back in the day. Akon was a capable boy, an excellent student, who had no family left. There was no one for him to lose, no one to mourn. From the very beginning, Mayuri didn’t even try to establish a father-son bond with him—because this is fucking Mayuri—and he didn’t take the boy in out of any good intentions. He wanted to raise an assistant with a high IQ. So there was never any talk of anything warm or affectionate between them.

By the age of 22, Akon had started working for his "father." He had no goal, no motivation to leave, and really, no reason to even consider it. Then one fine day, a guy with shrapnel wounds to the chest was brought to Akon’s operating table. The shrapnel was slowly being absorbed and moving toward his heart; basically, the guy was almost a corpse. Akon knew that in Mayuri’s lab, people weren’t simply saved, so he figured this guy either owed Mayuri money or had originally worked for him as an enforcer. Akon was ordered to transplant a heart into the guy—a heart developed by Mayuri through numerous experiments. Kurotsuchi decided to use Kira as a test subject. The operation was successful; the heart took.

It turned out Izuru was just an ordinary guy looking for work. He’d stumbled upon a small outfit that collected small debts from heads of minor, failing companies. On their list was the legitimate front of Mayuri’s business. That day, Kurotsuchi deliberately put both his own men and the collectors in danger by setting off an explosion, just to get someone onto his operating table. (Mayuri had sicced the debt collectors on his own company specifically to obtain "expendable material"). In the end, Izuru became indebted to the doctor—since the heart had taken, he had to work off the cost. The guy was ordered to work for Kurotsuchi until he dropped, and with no choice, he joined the dishonorable crew involved in abductions.

Kira, who had never been destined for anything like this before, would tell Akon about his life before the incident during check-ups (Akon needed to record the heart’s functioning and monitor the experiment’s progress). They grew close, and it wasn’t just simple closeness—they became practically the only ones each other had. They could only speak freely when they were together. (Of course, the foolish idiots fell in love).

Of course, Mayuri’s brand of fucked-up-ness didn’t stop there. Realizing he hadn’t had enough fun with Akon and had missed out on countless sophisticated torments he could have inflicted, he took in another orphan—a tiny four-year-old girl named Nemuri. Akon knew from his own experience what Kurotsuchi was capable of. He grew very fond of the girl; he wanted a better future for her than the likely prospect of death. Akon wanted to run from this life and experience a normal one—something that had never once touched him.
