okay real talk when it comes to listening to music..
if you have high-res headphones or earphones, you should start getting acquainted with FLAC or ALAC ( Apple Lossless Audio Codec in an .m4a file container if you have Apple products since it’s the Apple equivalent).
i think a pretty accurate way to describe the difference of listening between MP3 and losless format is that with MP3 at 320 kbps or highest compressed standard quality, like you can hear sounds coming from the left and right of your headphones, and it is crisp that you can still enjoy the music. but the problem with MP3 is when music is converted to Mp3 or before they’re put on the itunes digital store for purchasing and streaming, there are elements that do not get rendered or in layman’s terms, get lost during conversion, so you dont hear the entire product through MP3 unfortunately.
BUT WITH LOSSLESS, you start hearing little details and sounds you havent heard from MP3.. like seriously, i have tested this with many albums and there is a significant difference. Lossless audio is the COMPLETE studio package. so you can really hear the intricate beats through lossless. ALSO, you dont even hear the music coming from the left and right because there will be sounds coming from your upper left, lower right, it’s like being in a studio and you hear speakers coming from every direction. and each beat, instrumental, etc. is like surround sound. That is what FLAC or lossless music quality is like.
you can obtain these legally through either buying the physical CD then ripping the CD to ALAC or FLAC format which will take you a google search and browsing tutorials tbh. also there are different programmes for Mac and Windows so it can be a challenge to figure this out but if you’re a computer wiz, definitely consider this as an option. there are also websites that let you download lossless audio legally: https://www.cnet.com/news/top-6-sites-for-buying-flac-music/ . but not all albums are available on FLAC there and there is a limited selection.
from personal experience, i get these legally through buying vinyls because if I love an album then collecting vinyls is the way to go. ALSO the sound quality from a vinyl is superiour over physical CDs (like FLAC over MP3) and since HMV and the physical CD industry are dying anyway and since the quality you get from itunes or streaming is no different from the mp3 in physical CDs so it’s cheaper to buy digitally than purchase CD. but it is really different when it’s a vinyl that’s also why the vinyl industry is still stable and strong. of course, you will have to purchase a sturdy and efficient turntable too. (dont buy the one from Urban Outfitters, it’s not a good quality and i know someone whose vinyl got damaged from using it. you’ve been warned.) you can google search some great turntables from stores, amazon, etc. and look at the customer reviews then pick the best reviewed ones ofc.
and also since every vinyl comes with a card where you can download the music digitally. they will give you a website and code where you input and they will give you an option to select which format you would like to download, and selections include FLAC and ALAC, the highest quality of music and this is evident when you see how significantly bigger their file sizes are when compared to MP3 in 320 kbps. ALTHOUGH this is not always the case.. some vinyls especially when the download card is from dropcards, they just give you an mp3 zip file which is annoying
so yeah if you ended up buying vinyl and there’s no FLAC format available and if the FLAC of an album isnt available from legal website. torrenting the albums and downloading them in FLAC or ALAC format is a free alternative especially when they’re available. HOWEVER, ESPECIALLY for non-mainstream/indie artists, i really suggest you at buy a digital copy of their album or at least pay for a streaming platform then stream their music just to support them because those dollars will really help since they’re not huge artists. in this way, the artists and the producers are compensated because you have bought an original copy of the album, it just so happens you want the lossless format
like when it comes to Pop artists, i understand the argument that they’re already super rich so torrenting their music will make like a cent difference in their bank. i stream their music at least though and i dont really see the need to purchase Pop music in vinyl cause the production can be pretty basic unlike indie/experimental music where producers are more adventurous so hearing it in FLAC is really a must. but there are Pop albums which are superiour too in FLAC though but most dont really have a noticeable difference
but yeah i will emphasise, for non mainstream artists, if you plan on getting their music in FLAC or lossless format, please purchase the album digitally if you dont plan on buying a vinyl, ripping from a physical CD, but downloading their music through torrent
again, i dont encourage downloading torrenting but what i mentioned is an ethical alternative and way better than just torrenting and not paying for their work. i mean, lbr, if you want to show support for an artist and thank them for making amazing music, it’s fair that you pay them for their hard work. it’s really a fair exchange especially if you wanna hear them in their highest resolution

TL;DR: FLAC or ALAC are superiour over MP3. buy vinyls if you wanna hear a high quality sound similar to FLAC/ALAC, check some legal FLAC/ALAC downloading sites too (cheapest legal alternative). you can also learn how to rip from a physical CD into FLAC/ALAC. if you cant afford vinyls or find the album through the legal sites, buying their album through iTunes then downloading the FLAC through torrent is an ethical alternative
