White Sands Evening. New Mexico 2016.

White Sands National Monument is one of the most unique and beautiful places I’ve ever visited, in one of the most beautiful and unique states. New Mexico is awesome anyway, but white sands is this amazing geological wonder you wouldn’t even know existed among the neighboring desert mountains. It’s tranquil and gorgeous, and a must see if you’re in the region.

Top photo:  Kate Forrest was a Public Health professional and advocate for women’s abortion rights who worked for Planned Parenthood. She was very concerned about the fate of our planet due to climate chaos and attended every environmental action we sang at. 

Bottom photo: Marian Bush was a learning disabilities specialist who worked with children in the Santa Clara School District. She was written up in a fascinating story about her life in the San Francisco Chronicle in 2008 that included this part of her story:

“..she remembers watching the sky turn to fire just outside Albuquerque in July 1945.

She had just graduated from college and was working as an air traffic controller at Kirkland Air Force Base. Moments before the explosion she gave orders to a fleet of World War II B-29 bombers to take to the sky.

‘I was terrified because I thought I had given a wrong command and the bombers had crashed in the air,’ she said.

The next day, the newspaper reported that an ammunition dump had exploded in Alamogordo. In time, the atomic bomb test at what's now known as the Trinity site was revealed. ‘I didn't know until World War II was over that it had been an atomic bomb," she said. ‘That's what's happening right now. So often we don't know the truth’.”

We had been talking about a shoot for a good while but nothing really happened. My friend Annie is a jeweler, a good one at that, and had some new product she wanted to showcase. She asked me if I knew anyone who was willing to model her jewelry. I could only think of one person I knew would be perfect for the shoot.

The setting was White Sands National Monument, in between two storms, and getting 40 m.p.h. winds in our face. Getting sand blasted for hours can wear a person down to the bone, but not her. She kept her composure the entire time, like if there was no wind or sand flying in her eyes. 

Today it stands as one of the most difficult shoots I’ve had to do, but the results I got were some of the best I’ve seen in a long time.
