✨Review✨ . Treacle Walker by Alan Garner . How do I BEGIN to describe the experience of reading this book? It’s fun, but it is so confusing (specially because english is my second language) and I spent most of my time googling things. Other than the language barrier, this is a fun and dreamy exploration on time. With a fondness for what’s silly and ridiculous, Alam Garner gives us a piece of him playing with words and sintaxis. It gave me Alice in Wonderland meets Take On Me by A-ha. #fallforbooksmugglers Day 31: Scariest Read Alan Garner's The Owl Service terrified me as a child, so much so that it was only relatively recently that I tried re-reading it as an adult, and it proved to still be chilling, creepy and claustrophobic. It definitely didn't help that we watched the TV adaptation at school, as well as reading the book. I was never able to finish The Owl Service as a child but that line always stayed with me. Like Red Shift, this isn’t an easy read, but its magic stays with you.

‘Not haunted,’ said Gwyn after a while. ‘More like – still happening?’

There will probably be an increase in book posts in the coming weeks as I’m bed-bound. But then again Love Island isn’t going to watch itself.

I read Red Shift by Alan Garner on my kindle and couldn’t find a decent image of the cover online so thought I’d post this image of some suitably cosmic/comic graffiti I saw in Margate this weekend. Graffiti plays an important role in Red Shift: the inspiration for the book came when Garner saw the words ‘not really now not any more’ written under two lovers’ names in a train station, a sentence which became the last line of the novel.

It’s not really true to say that you read Red Shift, it’s more that it enters your life. There’s no way you can understand everything on a first reading. In fact, I found it easier reading Joyce and Woolf for the first time. To give you an idea of how tricky it is: the last page is in code! It’s remarkable that Red Shift was and is still marketed as a children’s novel. But I look forward to future readings, hoping to unpick its layers and lacunae. Another recommendation from the fantastic Backlisted podcast.
