experience (alpaca farmstay)
March 04, 2016: So here I am, on a Friday night, writing about my time working and living at an alpaca and goat farmstay in Australia. I would have never known that life would put me in a place like this after 26 years of existence. Life is strange and that’s just how I like it.
While this is but a temporary thing that will come to an end after the weekend, I feel like there is a handful of things that I have learned/realized/experienced (I’m not too sure which word is best to use).
I’ve had a lot of time to think, despite the fact that I do that already too often, but now with less distractions. I’ve had the chance to be kind and interact with wonderful creatures like alpacas, goats, chickens, and even a peacock (okay, well, he never really came near me but I marveled at how nature works its wonders in making different colors in its feathers); and the other wonderful creatures were the farm managers and their family, and a German backpacker couple. I’ve had the time to focus on simple tasks like raking leaves, feeding animals (and learning I have hay fever), painting a cabin porch, cleaning windows and rooms; all while trying to find zen in them.
I’ve had time to actually deeply listen to music and focus on the melodies and let them take me on journeys. I revisited some lectures from Alan Watts and found more clarity in them. I had the opportunity to observe and be amazed at the little things again—the tiny crystals in rocks, wandering ants, spiders, and bugs on plants. I’ve had the chance to swim again, skate, play billiards, and shoot some hoops.
I’ve also had the time to watch the whole season 3 of Futurama, and just when I was getting to the point of saying that this was a waste of time, the second to the last episode struck me with an unexpectedly profound quote: “When you do things right, people won’t be sure you’ve done anything at all.”
I’ve had the chance to practice a long overdue skill that needs practicing: driving. Cumulative with my other experiences in life, this has set my sights on another goal in life, that is to do a road trip across Australia. A tale and plan for another time.
I’ve had the chance to cook a massive feed of adobo, guacamole, and fried rice for the folks here, and in return taste some damn good burger patties from the Germans. Part of this was the task of collecting fresh (and mistakenly some rotten) eggs from secret spots where the chickens laid their eggs. A real egg hunt!
I’ve had the opportunity to sleep and wake early! Something that I need to bring back as a habit and another step towards healthy living. I’ve had the chance to soak up some good nature as well. We went on a bush walk to find a (shitty) waterfall, but instead discovered a large flat rock surface on the mountain, played giant tic-tac-toe and enjoyed the sunset instead.
March 06, 2016: It’s the last night before I go. I’ve decided to spend the late afternoon watching the sunset at the edge of a cliff all the way back at the end of the farm. Solitude. It’s really peaceful out here. Fresh air and the rustling of the leaves in the wind, with an occasional bird call here and there. I feel calm.
And here is where it ends. I feel like there was still a lot I’ve failed to do, but on the positive side there’s a heap of stuff I have done and learned. I’m happy about that. You can’t have everything in life, so you just gotta work with what you have and enjoy every moment. I just want to keep learning and collecting various intriguing experiences in life. So, that’s it for this adventure, onwards to the next!
You can volunteer at Madison’s Mountain Retreat, too! Alternatively, you can book a cabin for a weekend getaway and find them at 1880 Bells Line of Rd, Kurrajong Heights, NSW, Australia.
