Bird #71 - the Guam kingfisher (EW) [male]

The Guam kingfisher, or sihek, was endemic to Guam but declared extinct in the wild in 1988 due to the invasive brown tree snake.

However, captive breeding was set up before they disappeared! Last September, 9 kingfishers were released onto Palmyra Atoll - quite far from their original home, but safer. At least 3 nests with eggs have been confirmed, showing they're doing okay on their own! The aim is to reintroduce birds to Guam once the tree snake is eradicated.
