“Why didn’t you ever tell me? What didn’t think you could trust me?”
“Tell me the truth Arkender.” The effect of his name was immediate, like he’d been slapped in the face.
“The truth? You want the honest to gods truth? No. I didn’t trust you. Why would I? Your reputation and anger proceeded you and what would you have done? Gone into a rage and screamed and fought me? And then how would I ever have gotten us to where we are now.”
“Where we are now? Our entire relationship is built on a lie! Was anything real?”
“Really? How am I to know that? We met under false pretenses that you’ve kept up for centuries. Did you ever truly care about me? Do you care about me?”
He reached for her then, but her body recoiled away. To protect itself. To protect her. From him, of all people.
Before she really knew what she was doing, she’d left and ran for several streets. At some point she’d stumbled into a bar.
Where she remained for an unknown amount of time before a voice, an all too familiar voice broke through her frantic thoughts. “What’s the saying? ‘Look what the cat dragged in’? Or perhaps in this case, what the cat let go.”
“Hmm. No, I think I’ll stay. Besides, in this state, you really shouldn’t be alone raindrop. Whatever he did must have been pretty bad. Unless of course you’re here because of that mortal. Really, that would just be-“
“He lied about the reason we met and used me.” The words were out before she considered who it was she was talking to. But then, what could he do compared to that of all things?
“I’m sorry.” His words sounded….genuine. The shock must have shown on her face as she turned to him, because he held his hand to his chest and affected a pained expression. “You thought I wouldn’t care? We were friends once my dear, and I am hardly one to let such valuable things slip through my fingers. Truly, I am sorry, both that he did it, and that you found out. If you’d allow me, I think I might know how to take the edge off?”
Somehow, he looked just as genuine as he sounded.
But this was Conor, he couldn’t be trusted. She shouldn’t trust him.
But that voice sounded distinctly like the very person who had lied to her for almost all of her life.
And in this moment? She desperately wanted to. Needed to.
“What did you have in mind?”
