Hey, I wanted to ask about your opinion on something. I’m wanting to create a non-binary character and the one thing I’m having trouble with is figuring out the hair. I originally wanted them to have a shaved head, but looking at non-binary characters in media it seems that “shaved head = non-binary” is a bit of a stereotype. I’m a trans male myself and I feel like hair usually is a big part of someone’s gender identity/expression. So what are your opinions on hair and gender identity?
I think hair plays largely into passing culture since we absolutely cut boys and girls hair differently and even have different hair shops for them, and while I support and understand those for whom this is important, I’m more interested in breaking down these barriers that uphold concepts of “passing” than I am in upholding them, TBH. Just personally.
I can name like two nonbinary characters and neither of them have shaved heads, nor do we get very many asks from nonbinary people about thinking about shaving their heads. A lot about asks about how to cut, style, or wear their hair due to fluctuating gender or an inability to come out, though.
