If I want to start learning the Hebrew alphabet should I learn the capital letters (like אבג) or the cursive ones? (Sorry if my terminology is wrong! I just saw that your previous post had the Hebrew alphabet in cursive)

Thank you for writing to me!

There are two primary ‘systems’ of Hebrew letters that you could potentially be working with and learning.  The first system is the ‘block system’- which you referred to as “capital letters.”  You will most likely want to begin here as this is the ‘system’ of prayerbook Hebrew, of modern Hebrew print etc.    You should only consider learning cursive if you are interested in doing any intense study of Jewish texts, learning Modern Hebrew, or if you’re interested in learning the shorthand. 

As an example, I only first learned cursive in college when I began learning Modern Hebrew.  My entire family cannot write/read cursive Hebrew because they just don’t need to know it for their own personal Jewish practices.  In reality, it’s up to you in the end!  

If you are a prospective convert, a conversion student, or simply a Jew interested in learning or relearning the aleph-beit- I would suggest beginning with the block letters.  Cursive can always come later- there is no need to have to learn two systems at once.
