Okay, so I never gave any serious thought to the layout of Luffa’s star-yacht. It’s a prose story, and I always get bored when books try to describe complicated things that I’ll never be able to see anyway. So I kept it intentionally vague, and occasionally threw in a few minor details, almost always about the interior design choices. I can sort of see certain rooms in my head, but mostly the bridge is the bridge from Star Trek:TNG, and the gym looks like a gym, and the observation deck looks like the deck of a cruise ship with a transparent canopy over the whole thing. That’s about it.
But I can’t shake the idea that it’d be nice to build a model of the thing. I was looking at Legos and I always thought that might be fun to build something, but I don’t have a concept in mind. So maybe this would scratch the itch, except I’d want to try to build it to scale with a minifigure, and I’m pretty sure that would end up being huge.
So now I’m like, well, maybe this is a good excuse to try Minecraft. I’ve seen big projects people have built in that game, and I never understood the point, but now that I have my own idea, maybe this would be a good thing to do. At least, I could build some interior rooms, get an idea of how that should look, and then figure out what the hull would need to look like.
Because I looked up some Star Wars ships for inspiration, and there doesn’t seem to be a real pattern to spaceship design. The yacht from the Han Solo movie is shaped like a tall building, which seems kind of silly, but who’s to say that it’s a bad design? The engineering principles behind these things are all made-up. The only real rule is to make them look different.
So that’s been on my mind lately. I bought a few video games recently, but maybe I should scratch this itch.
