Portraits of the uncommonly handsome Swedish actor Nils Asther taken by George Hurrell and Alexander Binder in the 1920s and early-1930s. Born to Swedish parents in Copenhagen, Denmark on January 17th, 1897, Nils was raised in Sweden and got his first acting job in the daring gay-themed Swedish silent movie The Wings (Swedish: Vingarna) in 1916 at the age of nineteen. Launched to fame due to his good looks, talent and screen charisma, Asther starred in a number of European silent pictures over the next decade before moving to Hollywood in 1927 where he quickly found success in leading roles opposite Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Marion Davies and Barbara Stanwyck. Dubbed "the male Garbo" by the press, Nils found the increased attention of being a Hollywood "matinee idol" greatly intimidating and, like fellow-Swede Greta, he valued his privacy, guarding himself not only for his peace of mind and solitude but also to prevent being outed by the press as a gay man, which would have destroyed his career. At the peak of his Hollywood fame, a "lavender marriage" was quickly arranged in 1930 to actress Vivian Duncan (of "the Duncan Sisters" fame) who'd co-starred with Nils in the movie Topsy and Eva three years earlier. The couple had one daughter during their unhappy union before divorcing in 1932. Nils then embarked on relationships with director Mauritz Stiller, writer Hjalmar Bergman and other male associates as his career faltered in the 1930s. A long-term romance with American sailor Ken DuMain was sparked after a chance encounter on Hollywood Blvd. in the early-1940s and the pair stayed together for a number of years. Continuing to act in British and American movies (though in lesser roles) and making a few television appearances in the 1950s, Asther gave up on Hollywood in 1958 when he returned to Sweden where he appeared in film and stage roles before retiring from acting in 1963. Devoting himself to painting in his later years, Nils lived to be 84 years old, passing away in Stockholm, Sweden on October 13th, 1981.

Herontdekte zedeloosheid
