Intersex Awareness Day is coming up this Monday, and we’ve interviewed some of our members about being intersex! Meet Alice Alvarez. She is 26, uses she/her/hers pronouns, and her favorite color is Teal or Aqua Blue. She also likes reading books (she’s currently reading Contesting Intersex, by Georgiann Davis) and playing video games. You may know her from a particular buzzfeed video....

Hi Alice! What is your intersex variation?

AIS - Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome.

When did you first learn that you were born with AIS?

At age 12, I had a physical for the soccer team. The doctor asked if got my period, did an examination, and took my mom out of room to talk. Then he came in and gave bullet points on my diagnosis, explained that I had to see many different doctors. It didn’t really register. I was concerned with not getting my period, since all my friends did. Soon after he explained more, but it took several years of learning more from doctors, my own personal research, and joining the AISDSD support group to fully understand it, and come to terms with it.

How did you feel after you found out?

It felt unfair. I was like “Of course, I would have this.”

Aww, were you directed towards any peer support?

NO. Not at all. Doctors told me to stay away from support groups, that they were “full of crazy people.” I found the AISDSD support group when I was 13 and searching on the internet, but I was too young to join. I didn’t join until I was about 22.

Do you identify as intersex?

Yes, I do! Now, more than ever, I feel strongly attached to the term “intersex.”  I feel like when I first found out I was told and encouraged to ignore it and just think of myself as a typical female. Which was a form of denial. The doctors told me to keep it secret or else some people may make fun of me. Don't tell anyone. Only my mom knew for a while, no one else in my family knew. Now that I understand myself I realize there is no shame or anything really that unusual about me. I want people to recognize that Intersex people exist and I am a living, breathing example. Otherwise, the world will never really recognize and embrace us as people who don't need to be fixed.

What about LGBTQ?

I think I do. Do we add in the “I?”  I wish it was more represented, it feels like it’s all part of the same community. We’re all fighting for our rights to be free who we are.

So true! Speaking of which, has your intersex traits ever played a role in your experiences with dating or romantic relationships?

No, I got lucky! The people that I’ve dated have never really had a problem with it. Plus I’ve been friends with people before dating them, which has made it a lot easier too.

Do you have any advice to give to young children or teenagers growing up with intersex traits?

When you’re ready, reach out to a support group or Inter/Act and get in contact with someone who is intersex. It will help you know you’re not alone, and there are people out there with similar experiences! And there’s nothing wrong with them, there’s just something wrong with the way the world deals with intersexuality. :)

Now...most importantly. What is your favorite animal?

Giraffes! It used to be a polar bear, though. And foxes are cool. ^..^
