Alice Elizabeth Doherty, the "Minnesota Woolly Girl" (1887-1933)
Alice was born in Minneapolis and is the only recorded American to be born with hypertrichosis lanuginosa - or Werewolf Syndrome - which caused her to grow hair all over her body.
The blonde, blue-eyed girl quickly became a human marvel, and was exhibited at the age of two. One Wisconsinite described her as "frolicsome as a kitten," while a Michigan fan called her "the most miraculous baby ever born." By age five, her facial hair measured more than five inches, and by her early teens closer to 9 inches.
Managed by her family, she didn't do as well as other famous hairy marvels, but was content with her success. She wasn't an entertainer and her heart wasn't in show business. After amassing a small fortune, she retired at age 28.
