Imagined Structures
The term “Brutalism” was first used by architect Alison Smithson in 1953. She was describing an unexecuted project for a house in London’s Soho – dubbing its warehouse aesthetic of bare concrete, brick and wood as “the first exponent of the ‘new brutalism’” in England. Now, the movement is recognised the world over, with contemporary designers drawing influence from its monolithic, block-like forms.
Adriana Mora is one such artist. The Mexican digital illustrator – who has worked for the likes of Apple, Adidas, Uber and Microsoft – constructs 3D buildings within idyllic waterscapes. In these images, the visual language of Brutalism is counterpointed with memories of childhood – expressed through dreamlike colour palettes. Isolated structures appear from rippling pools, surrounded by plants or small islands.

AS in DS: an eye on the road
Alison Smithson has created a diary of car-movement recording the evolving sensibility of a passenger in a car to the post-industrial landscape. Her description in the book tries to develop new notions about the role of cars in architecture and town planning, seen from the motorway (highway), the road, the street, and from the parking lots, up to the entrance of the house.

No es casual que el descubrimiento de Darwin de una teoría que justifica la evolución de las especies, tuviera un punto de parada importante de su reflexión justo en esa línea de borde que marca el paso de la vida en el mar a la que se produce en tierra.
