“Laura, is it usual for parents to be over protective of their kids?” Laura glanced over her shoulder at Derek, stopping only momentarily in her cooking, before continuing.
“Sit, baby bro.” Derek rolled his eyes, but listened anyways. He sat down on one of the stools at the kitchen island, facing his sister. “Okay. Where does this question come from?”
“Well, Stiles, I guess. He’s super protective of Jenna.”
“Protectiveness is pretty normal in parents, Der. Especially when kids are younger.”
“No, but.. It’s more than protective. It’s almost paranoid, and he’s been like this the entire time I’ve known him. He woke up from a nap two weeks ago and freaked out, cause he didn’t know where Jenna was. He’s always on alert when they’re out in public.
"When we were first met, I thought it was just me. I thought he was just being cautious of this stranger, and that it would go away the more he got to know me. And it has mostly, when it comes to me. But he’s still always guarded, and keeps a really close eye on her. Like he’s scared something will happen.”
Laura hummed, handing Derek something to taste test for her.
“That doesn’t exactly sound like normal parenting, but who knows, maybe he’s just a helicopter parent. Maybe you should talk to him, baby bro.”
Derek huffed, handing Laura back her spoon.
“Needs salt. How do I do that without it sounding like I’m criticizing his parenting skills?”
“Don’t come at his parenting skills then. You’re seeing him tomorrow, right?”
“Ya.”
“Then talk to him then. Tell him you’ve noticed he’s been tense lately, ask him if something’s wrong, if it’s anything you can help with. Sound supportive, not criticizing.”
Derek nodded, standing up from the stool.
“Thanks, Laur.” He pressed a kiss to his sister’s head, leaving the kitchen.

Derek’s watch read 2:30pm, the ticking hands mocking him. God, he was running so late. He got caught up at the museum, and ended up staying way later than he intended. Thus making him late picking up Daniel, and even later in getting to Stiles’ for their standing Wednesday dates. Daniel was not happy about this, pulling his uncle full force towards the Stilinski’s front door.
Derek knocked once, before pushing it open. As soon it was open, Daniel was gone, bolting to Jenna’s room. Derek sighed, shaking his head as he closed the door and walked farther into the apartment.
He found Stiles asleep on the couch, curled around a couch pillow. Derek allowed himself to stare for a moment, seeing as no-one was around to pick on him for it. Derek could tell the man was tired, as he never left Jenna unattended. He had dark bags under his eyes, and he was lying in what looked to be a pretty uncomfortable position. But god, was he beautiful.
Stiles was so beautiful. His hair was mused on one side, as if Stiles was pulling on it, and flat on the other, from the pillow pressing it down. His face was relaxed, the tension he normally held in his shoulders nonexistent as he slept. Derek just wanted to walk over to him and kiss every mole and freckle on his exposed cheek
Jenna and Daniel came tiptoeing into the room, which was much different from their usual tactic of impersonating a stampede. Derek raised an eyebrow at the two as they came to a stop in front of him.
“Yes?”
“Tatuś said we were going to get ice-cream. Can we go now?” Jenna said in a hushed tone.
Derek looked back over to Stiles. He didn’t want to wake the man, he obviously needed the sleep. He looked back at the kids, their puppy dog eyes boring holes into his soul. Derek worried at his bottom lip, eyes flicking back over to Stiles. Finally he sighed, nodding his head.
“Give me a minute.”
He walked into the kitchen, going to the fridge, where he knew Stiles kept a marker-board. He grabbed the marker, writing a note to Stiles, letting him know where they went and that they’d be back soon. He drew a little heart for good measure, smirking to himself. He capped the marker, returning to the kids.
“Okay, lets go.”
The kids quietly cheered, opening the door. They were awfully quiet when they wanted to be. Derek made sure to file that away for future reference. They had to move Jenna’s seat to Derek’s car, as Daniel was using his. But they (Derek) did it quickly, and then they were on their way to get ice-cream.
****
Stiles yawned, stretching awake. His back popped a couple times, Stiles letting out a satisfied groan as it did. He blinked, looking around the room. What time was it?
Derek had messaged him, letting him know he’d be late. Stiles must have fallen asleep shortly after that, so he couldn’t have been out that long. He sat up, reaching for his phone. Stiles squinted in confusion, making sure he read the time correctly. Derek had messaged him at 1pm, which is right around when he usually gets here. It was now 3:30. There were no new messages from him either, only making Stiles more confused.
He stood, his body groaning at being removed from the unnatural position that Stiles had slept in. He ignored it, walking down the hallway to Jenna’s room.
“Hey, Bo, do you-”
Stiles stopped, as Jenna was not in her room. His face contorted in confusion, walking back to the living room. He looked around, thinking maybe she had fallen asleep on the floor and he hadn’t noticed.
When she wasn’t in there Stiles checked the kitchen, his room, even the bathroom. He checked the closets, under beds, even some cupboards. Jenna liked to play a game of hide and give daddy a heart attack sometimes. When he checked every possibility, he finally let the panic that had been bubbling up surface.
“Bożena Claudia Stilinski, if you are hiding it is no longer funny. You are in big trouble.”
There was no answer, and Stiles felt kind of stupid for talking to nothing, but his panic was over powering that feeling. His chest was getting tight, breathing becoming very difficult. He grabbed his phone, going to dial his father’s number. It proved to be a difficult task, as his hands were shaking. Just as he was about to hit dial, he heard laughing from outside, and then the front door opened.
Stiles dropped his phone, running into the hallway. Derek and the kids moseyed in, as if nothing was wrong. Stiles dashed forward, pulling Jenna into his arms. Jenna squealed in delight, hugging her father back.
“Oh my god, you had me so worried. I woke up and you were gone. Don’t you ever do that to me again!”
“It’s okay, Tatuś. Derek just took us to get ice-cream.”
Stiles stood, pulling Jenna up with him. He held her close, setting his glare on Derek.
“You had me terrified, Derek. Do you know what it feels like to wake up, and your child be gone? It’s soul crushing.” Derek stepped forward, trying to reach for Stiles, but Stiles just stepped farther away.
“Stiles, I am so sorry. I didn’t know we’d be gone for so long. I left you a note, I thought-”
“You thought wrong. You know how I am with her! Did you even consider me before you just decided to run off with my daughter?”
“Of course I did! You looked exhausted, I didn’t want to wake you. I just wanted you to get some rest. I took the kids to get ice-cream, and then we came right back. I’m sorry I made you feel that way, I really am. I’m so sorry.”
“Sorry doesn’t cut it, Derek. I think you should leave.”
“Daddy, no-”
“No, Jenna, adults are talking.”
“Stiles-”
“Now, Derek. Please, just go.”
Derek felt like his heart was punched out of his chest. He’s never seen that look of sheer anger and hurt in Stiles’ eyes before. And he did that. He slowly nodded, taking a step back.
“Say goodbye, Daniel.”
“Bye Jenna, bye Stiles.” Stiles’ face faltered for a moment, his eyes falling onto Daniel. The six year old’s bottom lip was quivering, not understanding what was happening, but knowing it definitely wasn’t good.
“Bye little man.”
Derek waved to Jenna, who was burrowed into her father’s chest. She waved back, tears in her little eyes. Derek grabbed Daniel’s hand, leading him out of the Stilinski household. He only looked back once, Stiles closing the door as he did.

“When I said you should make a move, I did not mean resort to petty theft.”
Derek tries not to cringe and fails spectacularly. Good thing no one’s around to see it. He stares down at the blue umbrella he’s twirling around in his hand, specifically at the tiny blue bird charm dangling off the handle and grumbles, “It’s not like I planned this, Laura.”
aka that au where Derek accidentally takes Stiles' umbrella and tries to return it to him.
Laura was four when her parents brought home a baby. [...]
The next day, she grabbed a basket and put her brother in it. The four month old baby blinked sleepily at her, and she grinned, “Hey, brother. This is for my own good,” she’d heard something like that yesterday at the movies, and it sounded cool.
She carried the basket into the Preserve, taking care not to wake her sleeping parents, and walked for a while before setting it gently on the ground.
“Animals of the forests!” she cried, “This is my offering to you! Take this baby in exchange for my family’s safety!”
Laura has tried to abandon her siblings 13 times (each), has convinced Scott that life isn't real in 8 occasions, and she's made her parents wish they'd stayed childless about 1000 times, but not really. A story in which little Laura grows up, and learns.
This is the alive!Hales, Laura & Stiles friendship fic I never knew I wanted, but am so glad to have found.

There’s a clatter and Stiles looks over the girl’s shoulder to find a guy standing behind her. He’s wearing an apron, dark to match the rest of the shop, darker still all down the middle where there’s a coffee stain spreading rapidly. He's staring at Stiles with wide blue-green eyes, and when Stiles meets his gaze he opens his mouth, closes his mouth, and then turns tail and disappears into what Stiles assumes is the kitchen.
Which is a little weird.
It’s not exactly the first time anyone has purposefully avoided him, but Stiles usually knows those people and they usually have a good excuse. This guy? Stiles doesn’t recognise this guy from Adam. Although he certainly wouldn’t mind roleplaying Steve.
A self-indulgent coffeeshop au turned into Laura/Stiles bromance turned into prom fic.
Stiles meets Laura in a coffee shop, the one he works at and within his first week of working he knows, this woman knows his soul. She has the same unhealthy addiction to sugary caffeinated, blended drinks as he does. It's honestly fate up until he sees her wedding ring. That doesn't deter him in his friendship quest, though. They can still be best friends even though she's married. It's months before they finally exchange numbers and begin their friendship outside of the coffee shop.
Laura tells Stiles about her amazing husband and crazy kids while Stiles tells her what it's like being a starving artist and trying to publish his own novels is a lot harder than he originally thought, but that's mainly because he's lazy and deathly scared of rejection. Laura wonders why he spends so much time alone and asks the last time he dated.
"Uh? Honestly? Probably in college," he answers, and apparently that's not satisfactory for her. She decides to set him up.
"We're almost the same person being that we were raised together," she explains. "Well not the same. I am a lot more outgoing and can actually talk to strangers, but really, once you get 'em open, you're good."
Stiles doesn't fully listen because he's not thrilled with the idea, but he does it. For Laura since Laura seems so excited about setting him up with this mystery girl.
He gets to the restaurant early and gets a table. Wearing a button down and really nice jeans, he thinks he looks okay. Good maybe? Impressive? And not at all like he just finally got a book accepted by a publisher. It's gonna be a good ending to a good day, right? Laura knows him, knows what he likes.
"Stiles?" a man asks, sounding nervous, and Stiles looks up at the voice and wow. Okay. He's never questioned his sexuality before but this man? Is very beautiful? Perfect jawline, a beard that looks so soft and Stiles might want it all over his face? He's not gay. Or at least he never thought he was? But holy shit, this man is hotter than the sun.
"Yes?" Stiles asks, standing up when the man reaches out his hand.
"I'm Derek," he introduces himself, shaking Stiles' hand and wow he has really nice hands. Strong. Big. They look like they can do things. "Laura's brother? The one apparently socially inept enough to need to be set up."
Stiles lets out a laugh and just squeezes the man's hand. "It's okay. Laura tells me I'm socially inept enough to need to be set up too. Maybe that's what got us here."
They sit down together, and Derek is ducking his head with a small smile. "But it's not too bad, right?" And is he blushing under his beard? Like that isn't the most endearingly adorable thing he's ever seen? God damnit, Laura.
"Not too bad," Stiles finds himself saying and there's more of a smile. "So how much has Laura told you about me and how much damage control do I need to do before this date goes any further?" And really, he never thought to question his sexuality. Then again, he'd never met Derek. Never had a reason to question it before tonight.
"She only has good things to say about you," Derek laughs. They pause when the waiter comes by to take their drink order. "And she calls you an idiot a lot which is Laura for I love you.”
Stiles laughs and nods, knows the language moderately well at this point and finds himself wondering if Derek has his own language that he can learn.
"Has she said anything about me that I need to fix?" Derek looks up, a shy smile on his face, and Stiles might be falling in love. Sue him.
Stiles runs a hand through his hair and shrugs. "Just that you two are almost the same person except she can talk to strangers."
Derek rolls his eyes at that but doesn't seem too annoyed.
"You seem to be doing okay so far," Stiles comments.
Derek shrugs. "You don't feel like a stranger."
And Stiles feels the exact same way, which is maybe exactly why he needs to say this. “I’m straight,” he blurts out.
Derek immediately tenses up like he’s on guard. “Is this Laura playing a joke on me because even she’s not that cruel.”
Now Stiles wants the earth to literally swallow him up because no that’s not what he wanted. Derek being upset is the opposite of what he wants.
“Or I thought I was straight,” Stiles tries to fix. “But I’ve never had reason to question my sexuality until now and maybe I could?”
This time when Derek rolls his eyes, there’s plenty of heat behind it. “I’m not here to be your experiment in sexuality. I graduated college already.”
“So did I,” Stiles quickly tells him. “I just. You wouldn’t be an experiment. It would be like dating. Seeing if we’re compatible. We don’t have to go that fast. In fact, we could go very, very slow. Get to know each other and then see if the sexing up works. I really, really think it could work because wow you’re a very very beautiful man.”
Derek’s eyes meet his cooly. “I’m not just an object, you know?”
Stiles nods his head. “Of course you’re not an object. You’re a human being. Who loves his sister enough to go on blind dates that are probably going to end in failure because I’m horrible at this whole dating thing, and your eyes are some otherworldly beautiful and you can see your blush under your beard and I just. I’m really really interested in getting to know you better. A lot better.”
Derek doesn’t seem fully convinced, but he no longer looks like he’s going to run for the hills, so Stiles will take the win.
At the end of the meal, they’re arguing over who will pay.
“Let me pay,” Stiles begs. “I made this whole thing a total mess. It’s my fault.”
Derek shrugs. “You can pay next time.”
“Next time?” Stiles can’t help from sitting up straight in excitement. He said net time.
Derek nods once with a little, private smile on his face. “Next time.”

"So how'd it go?" Laura demands the second she walks through the doors.
Stiles starts her order without her asking as he shrugs. "Derek didn't tell you?"
She sighs. "All he said was that it wasn't a disaster. I couldn't get any more out of him, but he sounded like he was smiling over the phone and you're smiling. So it was good, right?"
"Did you know I'm not gay?" Stiles asks instead of answering her question.
She flinches back, eyebrows raised. "You're...not?" Stiles shakes his head.
"Or maybe I didn't know and you did? Weird. Anyway. It went well. Ended with a kiss on the cheek."
"Damnit. He didn't tell me you rejected him. I'm so sorry, Stiles. I just thought."
"We're going out again tomorrow night," Stiles interrupts her.
Her smile is wider than he's ever seen and maybe a little manic if he's being honest. "You liked him?"
Stiles hands over her drink and nods. "Yeah, I like him. A lot. And I say that knowing full well you're going to recite this conversation to him."
She grabs her drink and leans across the counter, kissing him on the cheek. "Welcome to the family."
Before he can tell her it's a little too early to be saying that, she's already out the door. Turns out, she was right. And he tells her as such on his and Derek's wedding day.
