Veggie Living Isn’t Always What to Cook

Living with a Veggie Person isn’t always about cooking. Sharing space and making plans is important too. My Veggie Girl wants me to share with you some of the ways I try to make our weekends better. During the week I am cooking our meals and watching our intake of certain dietary requirements (which is especially important during the pregnancy), but the weekends are a time to relax a bit and if our budget allows eat out. Expand our culinary horizons and try new and exciting tastes, or revel in the comfort of familiar favorites. The catch is my Veggie Girl isn’t from around these parts and I am an Omnivore. so how does a Considerate Omnivore find a place that the both of us have a pleasant experience at lunch time on a lazy Saturday? Research. To that end I have compiled a short list of the places that I look first for information about restaurants in our area. Of course remember that all the internet searching in the world pales in comparison to speaking to cooks at the restaurant. So please ask questions, but remember to be considerate!

Vegan Restaurant Finder gives a wide range of primarily Vegan-friendly cuisines and doesn’t only list places that are Vegan (the must have a vegan option to qualify).

HappyCow is excellent source that has a selectable filter very useful in finding the perfect place as you can select from Veggie-Friendly or full Vegan places as well as others. The site is very well researched and hasn’t been wrong for me yet. The Yelp-like price indicator is brilliant.

All Menus is a very good resource as it lets you see the descriptions of individual dishes that usually include ingredients. Useful in answering questions about the contents of dishes with funny or fancy names. Remember that the menu may have changed since it was submitted, so you should ask questions at the restaurant itself to verify what you find here.

Yelp is always an excellent source of information, but it has to be taken with a grain of salt. It has a filtering option for results but it isn’t always accurate and the content is user driven so can be full of emotion instead of fact. I usually start here looking at reviews and actual pictures of the food to verify it is worth the price to be paid. The price indicator is the best part of this site.

Good old google. Reviews are usually more revenge based I have found, the hours are not always accurate, and the filtering options usually include Wendy’s in the results (you know, because they have salads). Despite all that it is still one of the most comprehensive list of local restaurants (and food store) databases around and can still be very helpful if used properly.
