Temple Of The Dog's sole release, a 1991 self titled album, is a sorely under appreciated gem of the early grunge days, and possibly the only soul album of the genre. A project formed in tribute of late Mother Love Bone lead Andrew Wood, fronted by Chris Cornell and featuring members of Soundgarden and the remnants of Mother Love Bone that would later form Pearl Jam, this is the heart of grunge given musical form. Musically, there exists a delicate balance between the heavy guitar and drum work and the magnificently broad vocals of both Cornell and a young up and comer named Eddie Vedder, the two singers complementing one another expertly, and lyrically there is as much in tribute to Wood as there is the angst and elements of dissatisfaction and protest that exists across all of grunge. It's worth listening to just for the oddity it stands as against the backdrop of grunge at that time, but overall I think it's a fantastic album, and have since I first heard it over a decade ago. The deluxe/anniversary edition features the full original album remastered, along with a lot of demos and alternate tracks, more than doubling the play length, so I'd lean towards that if you can't find the original, slightly grittier release. Highlight tracks include Say Hello 2 Heaven, Reach Down (an 11 minute epic), Hunger Strike, Call Me A Dog, and All Night Thing. Available on iTunes and Spotify.
