Ghost Noises is the production mind behind the brilliant title track for Obnox’s “Boogalou Reed”. Associations aside, “Zen Archer” has no problem surviving on its own merits. And it would be well worth it for rap fans to dig into the works of his home label and collective, Alloy-X.
“GHOST NOISES started in Cleveland, OH as a no-frills solo rap act - crate-digging sampler, witty MC. However, the no-genre 'sample-anything' approach to hip-hop production made popular in the catalogs of J Dilla & Madlib bled into the project's ethos - from beat selection to vocal delivery, nothing was out of bounds, as long as it sounded good. A deviant streak, steeped in decades of Northeast Ohio music tradition, peppers sharp rhymes about mental isolation and societal hypocrisy, delivered as dark comedy over minimal, bass-heavy production. The latest EP from Ghost Noises, "Zen Archer", captures recent recordings within the ALLOY-X collective, with labelmates Hokes and Urbindex splitting the production duties. After a year that's included collaborations with Ohio DIY legend Obnox, appearances at NYFW for the Cleveland-based RVAH brand and a constant presence in the city's underground electronic scene, it makes perfect sense that Cleveland would produce hip-hop that sounds like Ghost Noises.”
