Hi! I’m not really an artist, but we did this still life in art class, and I’m really proud of it! This was my first time drawing from life with color and shading. Let me know what you think!

This rose is lovely! I’m not sure if the colors are light because of way you took the picture of if they are light to begin with, so I am just going to critique it based on the picture above! For one, I think you are plenty of an artist! This really is a beautify rendering. It’s delicate like the flower and I can tell you put care into the petals and the tones that you chose. You used colored pencils yes? From the delicateness of the colors I at first thought it might have been watercolor. Still you did a good job with the colored pencils. Something beginners sometimes do is make the lines of the pencils go every which way (sorta chaotic crosshatching) but keeping your strokes similar helps with blending. Some things that you should work on is make areas that are very very dark compared to all of the flower having a general lightness about it. A good example is right on your own picture! Do you see the center of the flower where you have a sort of dark area? In the darkest spots of the flower try to add more darkness, if that make sense. ie, where petal overlaps. This will really help your rose POP. And with the leaves, you will want to do some more blending with them to darken them and give them more definition because they do kind of blend into the background white to me.
