Today was spent in the #alnif area which is nicknamed #trilobite capital of the world. In the morning we visited Jebel Tiskouine and saw trilobite diggings in the Ktaoua Formation of the upper Ordovician (Katian) (pics 1 - 5). The majority of the trilobites found here are the Colpocoryyphes and Flexicalymenes which grace #fossil shops the world over where they are often affectionately known as 'mud bugs'. It is estimated that over 15 million of these have been extracted in the last 30 years. At the site we saw many of these trilobites eg pic 1. We also saw brachiopods (pic 2). In one piece of rock (pic 4) there was a trilobite, gastropod, brachiopod and blastoid all together. We also saw camals with new born calves (pic 5). We then called into the town of Alnif to have a look stop. While there some of us popped into one of the several fossil shops. Pic 6 shows a Dicranurus monstrosus in a shop. Next we moved on to a picnic spot for lunch (pic 7), before reaching a #cambrian site (pic 8). At this site large yellow Cambropallas are found (pic 9). Our final stop of the day was the fossil shop belonging to Ben Said, the Fezouata Shale Lagerstatte discoverer, who we met yesterday. Here we were able to learn more about his amazing discoveries. Pic 10 shows a group of giant trilobites from the Lower #Ordovician called Dikelokephalinid (we visited their discovery site yesterday). We then spent a second night in Alnif.
