…enough time to enjoy a smoke. The habit had made itself present during his high school career and hadn’t really ever stopped. Slowed down, of course, but it was always some sort of option he had. Nowadays, however, he only smoked when he was extremely stressed. ‘I need it after this week…’ He nodded to himself, reaching into the briefcase to find the pack he had been working through over the last year and a lighter that had been given to him by a friend in college. He always made sure to take parts of his bad habit around with him, just in case he ever wanted to actually act on it. The lining of the briefcase was now quite wet and he let out a sigh—
—before feeling something in the pit of his stomach drop. Did he drop the pack into a puddle? How damaged were they? Obviously he could just go out and buy a whole new carton if these were wrecked, but that would take longer than a half an hour. It would be such a waste too—he still had more than half left, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to dole out the money when things had been a little tighter than usual lately. Finally fishing them out he quickly opened the pack and moved them around. ‘Ohthankeverything.’ Apollo both mentally and physically gave a sigh of relief, snagging one out of the package and tucking it back into a (hopefully less damp) spot in his briefcase before placing the annoying package against the wall where hopefully it would stay as dry as it could. Gently placing the cigarette between his lips he bit down, rolling the end between his teeth, and brought the lighter up. Taking a moment until he finally— with enough force— lit it, he held it under the tip and gave a few short gasps in. Watching, he saw as the paper turned grey and he felt something more than just air enter his lungs. Excitement took over as he gave a large drag, letting the smoke sit in his lungs and mouth. It stung momentarily, noting off hand that it must have been a while since he last did this, before the familiar warmth over took him. Leaning back against the building, he let his head loll to the side and a content smile made its way onto his lips. Yeah, that felt great. After who-know-how-long (some of his old pals used to tease him about how long he held his breath when smoking), he parted his lips and exhaled slowly. Eyes half-lidded, he watched as the tendrils of smoke wrapped around him and floated up and away. It wasn’t…really the nicotine that did it for him. Yeah, yeah, sure okay that was nice; for some amount of time that was a big reason he smoked—he needed that. After getting over that phrase, however, it changed. It was the act itself that was so comforting to him now. Just… lighting it, and then it was just breathing. It was just a breathing exercise that he learned to make the most of. The taste and the warmth the smoke brought, the way the small object felt between his fingers, the fun tricks he had learned to do when exhaling that he made sure to do when he was around someone he wanted to impress; the whole act in and of itself to him was highly relaxing and calming. After a few smokeless breaths, he brought the cigarette back up to his mouth and let it settle in between his lips. Sucking in, he made sure to hold his breath. He gave a small groan, so far into it he wasn’t entirely aware of his surroundings anymore. That’s why when the cigarette was so abruptly ripped out of his mouth he awoke out of his haze with a start, coughing out what smoke had been in his lungs. Looking around he saw the familiar blue suit and spiked hair and ohno Phoenix caught him smoking.
Phoenix Wright caught him smoking. “Here you are. I was wondering where you were.” Apollo felt his heart beat speed up and his knees shake and he gave a gulp. Phoenix had the offending object in hand and was examining it. Apollo remained silent and watched as Phoenix turned it over in his hand. “M-Mr. Wright—“ “I didn’t know you smoked.” Phoenix said curiously, still holding onto the half smoked cigarette. “I…I only do it. Sometimes.” Apollo gave a little nod. “I used to do it a lot more when I was younger.” Phoenix shook his head and let out a ‘tsk, tsk’. Apollo felt himself flush in embarrassment but also felt slight frustration well up in him. “We all deal with stress differently.” Apollo noted quite matter-o-factly as he snatched the object out of the older man’s hands and held it between its fingers, suddenly feeling much calmer with it on his own person. “I’m sorry you, uh, had to see me doing it though…” Apollo shuffled awkwardly on his feet and gave a tap to the object in hand, watching as ash fell off. “I know it’s not the cleanest habit…” “I don’t think any dirty habits are.” Phoenix pointed out while rubbing his chin, examining the younger man. “You know, I would have never pegged you as a smoker.” Apollo perked up. “Oh?” He tilted his head to the side, a small smile playing on his lips. “What did you have me pegged as then?” “Well…Honestly, kid?” Phoenix chuckled and shook his head. “You’re one of the most straight edge people I’ve met—at least, until a few moments ago.” Apollo gave a slight huff and looked off towards the side, watching as the rain poured down onto the walk way. Phoenix gave another chuckle and Apollo felt his presence grow closer. Looking back over, Phoenix was indeed closer to him—much closer to him than he thought. He was wearing the oddest expression too… “Do you, uhm,” Phoenix was suddenly looking quite fuddled and Apollo found himself utterly curious, “Do you have any extra I could bum?” A minute when by as Apollo’s mind registered what had just been asked. He felt his eyes go wide and a questioning look make its way onto his face. “M-Mr. Wright, you—“ “It was kind of an art college kids rite of passage. I stuck with it for a bit but once times got tough…it was something I had to cut out of the budget.” Phoenix brought a finger up to his lips. “Don’t tell Truce?” Apollo just stared in shock for a moment, mouth agape, before shaking his head slightly and nodding. “O-of course! D-don’t tell her about me either?” Apollo asked the second part quickly, hoping Phoenix wouldn’t be a jerk and go behind his back. Of course, he had his secret now too…he could get back at him if he did. “Of course.” Phoenix nodded before gesturing again. “So…?” “…Oh!” Apollo chuckled embarrassed and looked around a moment for his briefcase. Reaching in and sifting around for a moment, he pulled out the small box. “You smoke those?” Phoenix asked, quite indignantly. Self-conscious, Apollo pulled the container close and gave a nod. “Yeah. So?” “Nothing, nothing.” Phoenix held up his hands and gave the younger a smile. “You would smoke crushes—“ “You get the option of having a normal cigarette or menthol; it’s a win-win!” Apollo huffed as he took one out the package and reached for the lighter in his pocket. “It’s a damn good idea and hats off to whoever thought of it.” A step forward and Apollo popped the cigarette into Phoenix’s mouth, the older man choking in surprise, before Apollo fidgeted with the lighter a moment and then held it up and under Phoenix’s cigarette. “More brands are making crushes too, finally— “ Apollo waited to make sure it was lit before shuffling backwards. “Finally get some good tasting ones…” He trailed off as he watched Phoenix. The smaller man brought up his own and took a small breath in. Smoking. Smoking with Phoenix Wright. It was…kind of surreal. Apollo felt his heart swell up with various emotions at the sight of his boss and idol doing something so…dirty. Something so unexpected of someone of his caliber. That sudden emotion died down at the sight of Phoenix taking a deep breath and instantly coughing and choking, however. Apollo watched the sight in renewed interest, this time with second-hand embarrassment for the man and much amusement. He held back a snort as Phoenix tried to play off the whole thing. “It’s been a while.” Phoenix shot at the amused younger man. “I can tell.” Apollo just chuckled as Phoenix brought a hand up to his throat and stuck his tongue out. Phoenix gave him a look before taking another breath in, this time slower, and let it out with a big sigh. “It’s been way too long…” He mused to himself as he twirled the cigarette between his fingers. Silence over took the conversation as they both enjoyed this little break from everything. “Hey, watch this.” Apollo nudged Phoenix before taking a step forward. He inhaled, holding the smoke in his mouth, and gently puffed out a few misshapen smoke rings. The younger lawyer grunted in frustration, and much to his chagrin he could hear Phoenix snickering. “Nice trick there.” “Normally it works…” ‘Maybe I just need some more practice.’ Apollo let out a sigh before stepping back into place with Phoenix.
Looking over, Apollo noticed the cigarette in the others hand was hanging precariously between his finger tips. So obviously, at that moment, a strong gust of wind blasted them. Apollo turned his back to it, protecting himself and his cigarette from the wind and water; Phoenix wasn’t as lucky. A loud aggravated sound caught his attention as he turned around. Apollo saw that Phoenix was stumbling to gain footing before kneeling down near a puddle. Carefully, he pulled something out of it and—
Apollo could only gape as Phoenix dragged a now water-filled cigarette up to his lips, giving it a hopeful puff only to get no reaction. “What the hell Mr. Wright!” Apollo growled as he took in the sight of the largely still in tacked but unusable object. “You wasted one of my cigarettes!” Phoenix winced as Apollo’s voice rose and gave a shrug. “S-Sorry.” He apologized lamely as he still attempted to dry the object off. Apollo took a deep breath—‘You overreacted…’—and shook his head. “I-it’s…okay. Sorry, I just…can’t afford to buy a new pack for a while. And I feel like things are gonna keep being stressful for quite a bit.” Apollo gave him a sheepish grin, suddenly feeling foolish, before turning back to his briefcase. “I can give you one more if you want—“ “No, that’s okay.” Phoenix shrugged and gave him a warm smile. Apollo felt himself tingle at the attention before tilting his head to the side slightly. “You sure? I don’t make that offer to just anyone…” Phoenix chuckled and shook his head. “It’s alright; just being around it is good enough.” The taller man gestured towards Apollo and gave a deep breath in. An idea flashed though Apollo’s mind then—something he and his friends did when they didn’t have enough for everyone—but decided to dismiss the thought and shook his head. Phoenix was giving him a questioning look and Apollo just shook his head again. “You alright?” “Yeah, just…” Apollo took a small drag and held it for a minute before letting it go, watching it waft away into the rain. “Me and my friends had solution when there wasn’t enough. B-but I don’t think it’s…appropriate.” “Oh, now I’m curious.” Phoenix smirked and turned towards Apollo. “N-no, it’s dumb—“ “You mentioned it so now you gotta tell me.” “No.” “Apollo.” Phoenix gave him a stern look and Apollo felt his nerves get the better of him. Phoenix’s stare was quite intimidating. “We would— we would do this thing—“ Apollo gestured around slightly. “Do you know what a smokers kiss is?” At this he noticed Phoenix’s eyes grow wide. He shook his head. “It’s where you sort of…It’s where someone takes a drag, and then they exhale while another person inhales; you pass the smoke to them and stuff…” Apollo trailed off, remembering the days he and his buds used to do that when they were all strapped for cash. It’s not the same as actually smoking one…but it’s so much fun. Not to mention sort of…intimate. “That sounds doable.” Phoenix noted as Apollo sputtered. “Mr. Wright I don’t know if we—“ “It doesn’t actually involve kissing, right?” Phoenix gave a lazy smile. “Not that I’d mind that either, but ya’know…So. You start? Do we pass it back and forth?” Phoenix genuinely asked. Apollo quelled the few flips his stomach as doing at hearing that Phoenix wouldn’t mind kissing him and cleared his throat. “Uh, we can, but after a bit it’s nicer with fresh smoke…” Phoenix nodded. They both stood there for a few minutes, neither doing anything. “So…” Phoenix started, sounding slightly impatient. Apollo snapped to attention and took a few steps to close the space more. His bracelet tightened slightly, only making him more nervous but…curious. Gingerly, he placed one hand on the back of Phoenix’s neck and dragged him down. He took a quick drag and let it sit for a minute. “You know you really hold that for too long.” Phoenix replied, his tone meant to be mocking but it came out whispered, causing it to lose its desired effect. Apollo just felt himself smirk before tilting his head up slightly. Apollo left about an inch in between them, nodding. It felt like his heart was going to pound out of his chest and he was sure Phoenix could hear it clear as day. Steeling himself in hopes of keeping himself from shaking too much more, he gave a squeeze on the back of Phoenix’s neck before slowly breathing out. He heard Phoenix gasp, his breathing uneven as it tried to accommodate to Apollo’s steady pace.
Apollo let his eyes half-close, enjoying the closeness, before finally giving his last breath and slowly inhaling and pulling away. He looked up at Phoenix, who shortly afterwards exhaled, and gave a smile. “Not so bad, as I guess.” The older man was silent and Apollo looked at him questioningly. “Are you…alright? Did you get enough…? We can try it again?” Apollo cursed himself for sounding so eager to please but…Phoenix seemed just as stressed as him lately. He deserved it. Phoenix nodded and Apollo took a deep breath from his cigarette, noting how he had a couple good pulls left in it, and stepped forward. Or, he was going to, if Phoenix hadn’t stepped forward himself bumping into the younger man. He didn’t exactly stop walking however, Apollo letting out a few questioning noises, before he felt his back hit the wall. Losing his balance, Apollo reached out for something to grip onto—which just happened to be the man standing in front of him. Hands fisted into the front of his suit jacket, Apollo squeaked as Phoenix placed a hand on either side of him, trapping the smaller man, and leaned down. “You didn’t tell me these kisses were so intimate Polly.” Phoenix said in a sing song voice causing Apollo’s toes to curl. Apollo just shrugged, unsure how else to respond with lungs and a mouth full of smoke. Apollo squirmed—it had been too long even by his standards to have held his breath this long—and gave a tug on Phoenix. The other lawyer realized and quickly leaned down, lips parted and waiting. Apollo finally released and exhaled quickly at first, enjoying the relief. His nerves were going crazy as he felt Phoenix move in closer, swearing their lips touched, and made sure to slow down his breath to keep Phoenix waiting. He could feel Phoenix smile and felt a tingle go up his spine. Apollo finished exhaling and continued on with regular breathing, even if that breathing was more like panting and gasping for air. Phoenix was holding his breath now, and the two of them locked eyes. “I…I hope that was better…” Apollo managed to get out and Phoenix gave a grin before tilting his head to the side and breathing out. The smaller man watched in awe as the smoke curled around in the air and Phoenix’s face; it made him look…really attractive. Much more attractive than Apollo was used to and that was making him squirm now. Phoenix turned back and gave Apollo another grin, coming into rest his forehead against his pupils. “Thanks.” It was short and low and sincere and Apollo just nodded. Phoenix hadn’t moved away, but instead actually shifted closer. The older man’s hands shifted, one staying on the wall but moving lower towards Apollo’s hips while the other moved up next to his head. He leaned in right next to Apollo’s ear and let out a content sigh. “Really—thanks. It’s been way to long.” Phoenix purred into his ear and Apollo swallowed hard and nodded some more. “I-I know the feeling.” Apollo gave a weak smile and Phoenix pulled away, smiling back at him. They continued to stare at each other, neither making a move to push the other away, and Apollo felt himself swallow. Phoenix’s phone went off, scaring them both. Phoenix stepped away and rummaged around for his phone. “Hello?” The older lawyer called out as he finally managed to find his phone. “Yes Truce? …No, I found him. Yes, we will…okay…okay. Love you too, bye.” Apollo had grabbed his briefcase and shook it around to get the excess moisture off and stood waiting for Phoenix to finish his phone call. He brought the cigarette up once more, taking a deep breath and watching as it disappeared up to the filter, and threw the butt onto the ground. Crushing it with his foot he turned to Phoenix, the older man watching him, and gave him a smirk. Pushing his lips together and twisting his tongue he gave a few short puffs before blowing the rest out in one quick shot. “Aha!” He cried happily, fist shooting up into the air victoriously as he took a better look at his handiwork. He had managed to blow a few smoke rings, all being connected by a line of smoke going through the centers. Of course after a few seconds they all mixed together and disappeared. “Still got it.” He snapped his fingers once, giving a smug smile to his mentor and feeling all too similar to a certain prosecutor he knew. Phoenix was looking quite amused as he watched the younger. “That’s a neat trick when you do it right.” Phoenix teased and Apollo rolled his eyes, giving Phoenix a shove as he walked by him. “The rain stopped enough for us to get back.” ‘Hopefully.’ Apollo added, taking a step over a puddle. “If it starts again we’ll have to find shelter. I can’t afford to get this suit dry cleaned again so fast…” Phoenix shivered as the memory of what last happened to his suit surfaced and Apollo held back a smile. “C’mon Mr. Wright,” Apollo looked up at the sky and noticed a few clouds still lingering, “I think if we stop again I’d clear out what I have.” He gestured smoking and Phoenix laughed. “You have to share.” “Exactly why we can’t stop. I can’t afford you to waste anymore of my bad habit.” He smirked and Phoenix gave a frown. “We’ll just share, like we had been doing.” Phoenix walked up behind the man and gently placed his hand on the others waist. “I think I like it better that way.” Apollo felt his face heat up and shook his head before smiling. “You know…” Phoenix kept his arm wrapped around Apollo’s waist and brought his other hand up to run through his hair. “If you ever need a smoke break at work…let me know if you’d like some company.” Silence passed between the two as Apollo proceed the information. “Thank…you. Thank you. I will.” He said slowly before looking up at Phoenix and giving him a smile. “We need to keep it hush-hush from Trucy though.” Phoenix added. “Well duh.” Apollo said quickly, the two of the chuckling and enjoying their newfound bond as they made their way down the rain soaked sidewalk.
