I CAN'T FUCKING SLEEP AND THIS IS WHY:
***Long Post***
***Introspection***
***What I’ve discovered in the Last 10 Months as an Author***
So I’ve had an “Aha!” moment in the last 72 hours where everything has CLICKED...and I think it’s very important to share.
I’d like to share why I am here and what my motivation is:
In the past 10 months, I’ve realised Fandom is a funny type of game that you somehow stumble across...there are writers out there who have found a place to post anonymous “fix-it” "what if's" and all sorts of AU stories...I also looked up some numbers:
If you post on ff.com you are contributing to over 829k fics not including crossovers (HOLLY FUCKING SHIT!)
If you publish on AO3 you are contributing to over 292k fics (HOLLY FUCKING SHIT!)
So let’s talk about The Fandom Game. It exists - and YES, I'll say it again. IT IS A GAME!!! HERE’S MY LOGIC: We publish and we want to be *seen*. We go hunting for readers, we go hunting for comments and kudos - it's the reason WHY we promote. For the sake of my mental health, I jokingly call it “fishing” 🎣. As a new author with no reputation, you cast your fic out into the world and hope a tag or an image or a summary grabs SOMEONES’s attention and you get a nibble and then a kudos, and if you are LUCKY a review. IT IS A GAME! WE ALL PLAY IT.
IN THE THE LAST 72 HOUR I'VE REALISED NOT ONLY WHY I PLAY BUT WHAT KIND OF GAME I WANT TO PLAY.
MY GAME INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS :
1. READERS DO NOT OWE YOU ANYTHING - YOU ARE LUCKY IF THEY FIND YOUR FIC IN THE FIRST PLACE!
2. TROLLS ARE TOXIC, THEY EXIST, THEY ‘FISH’ TOO. I DON’T LIKE THEM - THEY REMIND ME OF SCHOOLYARD BULLIES.
3. I DON’T WANT TO BE APART OF ANY TOXICITY IN FANDOM. I HATE THE DRAMA. IT’S DESTRUCTIVE. I ONLY WANT TO UPLIFT. IN ORDER TO STAY IN FANDOM I NEED TO FIND PEOPLE WHO FEEL THE SAME - I’M LUCK THAT I ALREADY HAVE!
4. SHIP, AUTHOR, ARTIST BASHING IS WRONG! IT UPSETS ME, IT TRIGGERS ME. I WILL NOT INTERACT OR CONTRIBUTE THIS - IT IS A RISK TO MY MENTAL HEALTH.
5. I DO NOT SUPPORT SHIP BASHING OF ANY KIND.
6. I AM NOT INTERESTED IN COMPARING FICS AND JOINING FANDOM GANGS
7. I DON’T LIKE TRANSACTIONAL FRIENDSHIPS - I WILL KUDOS, PROMOTE, SUPPORT BUT IT IS FIRST AND FOREMOST AN ACT OF FRIENDSHIP AND CONNECTION.
8. I AM HERE TO FORM HONEST FRIENDSHIPS THAT UPLIFT OTHERS.
9. I WANT TO EXPRESS GRATITUDE AND BE GRATEFUL FOR THIS FANDOM. I COMMEND EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN BRAVE ENOUGH TO CONTRIBUTE TO THIS FANDOM! YOUR CONTENT ALLOWS ME STAY IN THIS WORLD A LITTLE LONGER!
I used to think it was all about climbing the ladder and stats. I’m still ambitious and want to do well, but it’s ultimately not why I’m here. Short and sweet - I am here because fandom and creative writing is an act of self-care. Songwriting and music is my first love, but with Covid...at the time I couldn’t even get to a music store to try out a new keyboard, let alone buy one. So I published lyrics, which became a smutty one-shot, which became a ficlet series, which became a multi chap WIP. I have found my voice, and confidence to contribute to a world I adore. And I realised that it’s the CONNECTION that drives me.
I also feel like I have finally found friends I was *destined* to meet! I have found my wonderful alphabet, I have established friendships with artists, and as a result, now I can make aesthetics. I realised I have enough knowledge of fandom due to 20+ years of reading and lurking alone...that I am capable of referencing Canon and Fanon! Not only that - there is this thing called being an 'Alpha' - where you can bounce ideas and content and help others in their creative process and journey. It is the coolest thing EVER! And I get to do this!!! It also means there are other people who explore characterisation and content and “what-ifs”...people that go “WHAT IF THIS HAPPENED?” and they are also happy to talk about it for HOURS!
So if you’ve got this far - I’m curious...How did you discover fandom? If you do contribute….what kind of game do you play? Is it the same? Do you write for fun, for practice, cause you plan to publish? What makes you hang out in the fandom?? There is no wrong answer - when we enter fandom, we ultimately set our own rules!
The first 100 sims of my challenge are done!! Afghanistan through Latvia, including Aboriginal and First Nations!
I cannot get over how adorable Cuba is! Yes, I did name her after Desi Arnaz. Too much I Love Lucy binge watching lately. It’s on Hulu! She’s just so perfect and I’m in love!
