What do the types mean and do the other two groups have them too, or just alphas? Also, what do betas do, since all ive ever seen when people write omegaverse tends to be explicit and about omegas and alphas, and the weird possessiveness of alphas made me too uncomfortable to look into it, but your posts make me feel curious enough to ask
Oh, this is a fun question. I hope you don't mind if I become an unskippable cutscene.
So, for reference, since you said you haven't read a lot of these aus, a good portion of A/B/O fics are going to smut because it's just an inherently sexual concept. I love lore and worldbuilding, so I focus a lot on how it would affect the world. A lot of the things in my world building are present in 90% of A/B/O fics, and a lot of things are just things I came up with.
When I say Type 1, 2, or 3 Alpha, I'm referring to something that I call ‘The Alpha Hierarchy’ or the Alpha scale. Omegas and Betas do not have groupings like it. This is something I came up with. However, I'm sure I'm not the first writer to do something similar.
The Alpha Hierarchy started as a joke. I had started writing the world building for this blog, and I had taken an edible. At some point in the night, everything got fuzzy, and I fell asleep. The next morning, I found a section I had written that said Alphas: Low Tier, Mid Tier, and High Tier. The only thing I had put for this section was ‘dick sizes’.
Obviously, I found the mental image of my stoned self trying to categorize characters by who I thought had bigger dicks hilarious. It stuck with me as I edited my world building and I decided to try to make it into an actual subgrouping.
The types are categorized by the number of ruts they have a year on average. Type 1s have the highest number of ruts, Type 3s have the lowest number of ruts. There's also personality differences that are said to be affected by typing, such as aggression, possessiveness, and confidence, but those are more stereotyping than fact. I still consider dick sizes to be an unofficial trait, but I don't really go ‘They're a Type 2 so they have a mid length penis.’.
Type 1s are the rarest type of Alpha (because I don't believe it would society thrive if the majority of people were very aggressive) but, due to their very loud personalities, they have wormed themselves into being the gold standard for what an Alpha should be.
Type 2s are the most common Alphas but are generally glossed over due to how common they are.
Type 3s are often considered ‘the lowest on the scale’ and are often on the receiving end of mockery. There's lots of jokes about how Type 3s are practically Betas and that they don't live up to the expectations of an Alpha. If you can't tell, a lot of this is a metaphor for how toxic masculinity affects young men and makes them believe they have to live up to this impossible standard.
In most people's fics, Betas exist just as an in-between. Typically for characters who aren't relevant to the smut. They do not have heats or ruts and instead follow the rules of real life humans: people who are born biologically male can get others pregnant, and people who are born biologically female can get pregnant. That's the long and short of it.
This next part is going to reference pregnancy and birth rates a lot, so be warned. All of this is my thought process on why humans would evolve this way, but none of it has any real big impact on the modern world.
In my au, Betas exist because of evolution. In my au, Alphas and Omegas evolved as a way to keep populations up. All the men in your town were sent to war? That’s fine because some women can get others pregnant? Not enough women in your town? Bam, some men can carry. However, both Alphas and Omegas have periods where they are unable to work. A society that's is full of people who can't work for periods of time because they're too horny would be very vulnerable. Enter Betas.
Since they don't experience heats or ruts, Betas don't have the same vulnerabilities that the others would. This means that civilization can keep running without pause. Of course, none of this has any real relevance to the plot. It's just my personal thoughts.
Thank you so much for asking this. I hope I was able to answer your questions without getting too wordy. I love this kind of stuff and these aren't facts I would usually have a reason to share. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
I don’t know if this has already been said or is in spoiler territory, but are Alpha abilities passed down by parents or randomly occurring?
Also if they are passed down, which of the MCs parents was/is an Alpha?
Oooh, a fun question!
So, being an Alpha is inherited; if one parent is an Alpha, there is a 70% chance (potentially higher) each child the parents have together will be an Alpha as Alpha genes are far stronger than human genes, AND I don't know if I'll say this in the first Mind Games series or not, but Alpha genes can actually mutate human genes during the zygote stage to change them into Alpha genes! Now, sometimes the human cells will be able to withstand this and result in a human child, but most times... there will either be a miscarriage, or a fully Alpha child. No in between. And I do mean no in between; there is no such thing as a half-human half-Alpha. You either one or the other.
As far as abilities go... that's uncharted waters. A lot of Alphas don't live long enough for there to be many studies between their abilities and their children's, at least, not at this point. Over 90% of Alphas alive at this point in the game's time are the children of the ones who were part of the final failed militarization in the 90's... and those parents are also, for the most part, dead. A lot of the militarization efforts included trying the same drugs they used on regular soldiers to get Alphas to also fall in line, plus a few new, very experimental ones, that lead to things like cancer and sudden, exponential cell death later. And, whichever ones survived that, likely didn't survive the first announcements of the 'kill or report' laws placed against Alphas.
So, in short? No one knows. Maybe they are inherited, maybe it's all unique to each Alpha. Maybe there'll be more data available in the future...
MC's mother was an Alpha! You'll actually learn a little about her in Chapter 5; she was one of the last few in the militarization efforts, and she died when MC was very young. And, maybe if you repair your relationship with your father, you'll learn even more about her.
Thank you for the ask!!! It was fun getting to spew lore about Alphas, haha!!!
Out of curiosity, what does an alpha-alpha relationship look like? Obviously I ask this partly in relation to Lex and Ethan, but also just in general in your hcs
The way I see it, Alpha-Alpha and Omega-Omega relationships would probably be a part of the LBGTQ+ community in this universe. So there's definitely bigotry against these kinds of relationships. Couples like John and Wilbur, Alive and Deb, and Ethan and Lex all face some form of discrimination, with Macnacross and Deb and Alice receiving a double dose of it due to being same sex and same second gender couples. It's partially why John and Wilbur were never open about being a couple (the other reason being that Wilbur was John's commanding officer).
I could also see Alpha-Alpha couples having a slightly easier time than Omega-Omega couples. That's not to say they don't experience discrimination, but Omega-Omega couples also deal with a form of sexism on top of it. A lot of ‘Oh they need Alphas to deal with heats.’ type bs. There's been a big fight for these couples to have the same rights in the eyes of the government. That was one of the big things Howard has done with his political career.
Ruts and heats would be handled probably the same way, just with more use of toys. Just like how there's an Alpha pheromone that can calm Omegas in heat, there's an Omega pheromone that does the same to Alphas in rut. I could Alpha-Alpha couples using an artificial version of said pheromone to make ruts a little easier.
I just finished binge reading Mind Games. I enjoyed it a lot and can't wait to see what you have next!
I do have some questions though. Do Supers also have a hatred towards Alphas, or would they only turn them in because that's what the government and Advocacy tells them to do? How come the government only sought out to eliminate Alphas? Surely, there had to be some Supernatural kinds that didn't want to be weaponized?
Hi, there!!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it <3 This might be a bad time to tell you, there is a planned rewrite coming that will (hopefully) make it even better!
I love lore questions! Lezzgo!
So, Supers do not have an innate hate for Alphas; in fact, there's a kinship kind of relationship there! Supers have to hide their existence from the world, just like Alphas do now. Also, unless the Super is a Tracer or is explicitly told, MOST can't tell an Alpha from just another weird Super. Alphas do smell different, but the mass majority of Supers haven't encountered enough Alphas to actually tell their scent apart from just like... a Super species they haven't encountered before.
The government only sought out to eliminate Alphas because 1. Alphas are far easier to discover back when they started popping up (Supers have kept to their own population since medieval times, whilst Alphas come from human parents; harder to hide if you aren't born into a family knowing how to) and the majority of the human population isn't aware of the existence of Supers, and 2. Alphas were failed at being militarized twice in history; once in the 1970s during the Korean War, and secondly in the 1990s when the Cold War was heating up again for a few years. When the USA couldn't militarize them (ie control them), they settled for all out extermination. And... many other countries followed. Supers, however, have never been militarized; the Advocacy are peacekeepers and employers to Supers, and also their ruling iron fist, in some cases. But never militarized... not by humans, at least. Other Supers, now that's a whole other can of worms.
Which ROs + Sylvia + Quinn are best at keeping secrets?
Since this is a multiple book series, will there be any flings or one night stands in the future? Any plans for side romances that aren't as fleshed out as the main gang?
World question - is there such a thing among humans as super envy? People wishing they were super instead of ordinary human?
Hmm...
Fawn, Loche, Quinn, Iri, and Sylvia are the best at keeping secrets. They already have so many to hide, what's a few more?
I don't really have plans for that, as I don't plan to offer a friends-only path. In future games when I have less ROs I will probably consider it, but for Mind Games the only options are the ROs!
So, the thing is, the mass majority of humans aren't aware Supers exist. They know Alphas do, and there is some Alpha envy, but only to the degree that they'd want to be Alphas if it didn't get them placed on the international most wanted list. There's some people who wish Supers were real and could be one of them, but still unaware that they exist.
