It used to be (and sometimes still is) derogatory and deciding whether or not to reclaim it is a personal decision. It’s not a slur if you’re the one using it but if it’s being yelled at you from a car or dropped in that tone from your grandma it’s different. It’s a word with a loaded history and depending on where you live it absolutely still can be a slur so please try to be understanding of people still uncomfortable with being called queer, even if you personally have decided to reclaim it.
Okay and gay can be said in a derogatory manner as well and in fact HAS been. But people still use that for themselves and as an umbrella term. "Gay rights" "Gay marriage" Gay this, gay that. I mean, shit I say I'm gay but I'm actually not. I'm queer.
I truly understand what you're saying here, but you gotta understand that gay can be just as offensive as queer. And it covers a lot less ground than queer does. Not everyone in the lgbt community can be considered gay. But all of them can be considered queer.
