I genuinely think there’s something deeply compelling about whump set in a boarding school environment actually.

It’s such an insular environment with its own rules and hierarchies, there’s often abuses of power by staff or older students, often even baked in institutional practices of hazing and subordination.

That and the fact that school is such an inescapable place, you can’t leave, you are subject to rules and authority figures. You can’t let people see your weakness or they might take advantage of it. There’s complicated social dynamics and mind games.

Truly I think school can be like a prison but people probably just don’t write it because they don’t want to imagine young people suffering but like. It can be so cathartic to acknowledge just how fucked up the setting is
