headcanon: sam challanged steve to a rematch,,, but listen it wasn’t entirely his fault. he likes to blame bucky and clint for his second defeat around the national mall (sam doesn’t believe that steve went ‘easy’ on him steve is full of shit)
see when bucky had heard the meet cute (clint calls it that sam thinks its stupid) he was like “what do you mean steve didn’t let you win? who wouldve thought he would. he never had anything handed to him in his life, no shit you couldn’t beat him birdman. my boy not about to let you win, he has a serum sure that is cheating, but were fucking superheros man… no shit he can beat you at running. case closed , rogers would win and barton owes me five bucks. THANK YOU!” and he just continued drinking his coffee.
so of course sam had to like defend his honor and challenge cap to a rematch. however sam employed the help of bruce’s science knowledge and tony’s need to make shit to have them rig 2 treadmills that would make steve and sam equal competitors. bucky was still talking all kinda shit that steve could still beat sam even if he was one legged and clint was like “nah nah man sam can FLY” and no one knew what that had to with anything but everyone just like yeah clint yeah he can
so anyway they get on their special treadmills, really only steve’s was special bucky just put a shit ton of birds on sam’s to sike him out. the equivalent of 5 miles later… steve still won. but he told sam that he would win if they ever had a flying contest to which Clint yelled “hell yeah he would” (he had to yell cause bucky was being obnoxious about winning the bet)
sam was salty about it for only about a week, until bucky fell down the stairs cause he was too busy making fun of sam. (sam was literally the ‘why are you smiling’ meme for like 3 days). steve never got in the middle of it cause he knew he wasn’t allowed to take sides. he was just extra nice to sam cause his ego was slightly bruised. but sam still always won the ‘who here can actually get drunk challange’ and he told bucky “whos the real winner now banres? that’s right it’s me!”
