Happy 5th Birthday to
“Playing Children's Games in Total Darkness”
Day Three: (for want of) Tall Grass
The problem with long solo watches was that it was easy for the mind to wander. With the life he had lived that tended to meant his thoughts went back in time.
"Can't we do something? For the animals, I mean. Seems a shame to leave them here in such a sorry state. All that meat." The words were said with the too-casual air the kid adopted when he was trying to pretend he wasn't dwelling on something.
Arcade had grimaced, running a hand through his blond hair before he adjusted his glasses. He had started explaining the difficulties of treating malnourished animals and Six had turned and started walking North, knowing the two would fall in.
One of the Brahmin calves outside bayed in alarm and Six tensed, his hand on the butt of his gun, ready to draw. The calf bayed again and it's mother called back. He waited for a moment, tense, and gradually relaxed as the the herds outside remained silent.
He settled in again in the loft of the barn. His ears was tuned to the noises outside and the those from the young man sleeping behind him.
Again his thoughts drifted.
"Then what happened here, old man?" A pair of incredulous blue eyes had turned Six's way, bright against the tanned skin around them. Kid was going to end up looking like leather before he was forty, if his recklessness didn't get him killed by then.
"Look around, kid. Two graves, a fresh burned house, a third person missing? Tragedy." The words had been said matter-of-factly but not unkindly as Six had pulled a hand rolled cigarette out of his pocket and lit it.
It hadn't satisfied the kid. The young man really, with two decades under his belt. he had insisted they stop until he had dug up the journal entries, or as many as they could find.
It had been much as Six had expected: tragedy, through and through. Did it matter the details when the results were the same?
A family torn apart by happenstance, then finally destroyed by guilt and stress.
All that was left was the animals and the tall, dry grass that wasn't enough to sustain them.
