How to Set Up a Beginner Witch Altar

An altar is a sacred space where you focus your energy, perform rituals, and connect with your craft. It can be simple or elaborate—it’s all about what feels magical to you.

1. Choose a Space

• A shelf, nightstand, box, windowsill, or desk

• Keep it private or discreet if needed

• Cleanse the area before setting up

2. Basic Altar Items

You don’t need everything—start with what you have:

• Candle – for fire & focus

• Bowl of water – for emotion & cleansing

• Salt or soil – for earth & grounding

• Incense or feather – for air & thought

• Crystal, plant, or object of power – your anchor

• Offering dish – coins, herbs, shells, etc.

• Personal item – something that connects you to your spirit (jewelry, photo, charm)

3. Optional Additions

• Deity or ancestor symbols

• Tarot deck or pendulum

• Written affirmations or sigils

• Seasonal items (flowers, leaves, fruit, bones, etc.)

• Journal or Book of Shadows nearby

4. Keep It Alive

• Cleanse your altar regularly

• Switch it up with the moon or seasons

• Use it for meditation, spellwork, or simply sitting in sacred stillness

The very first statuette of Sophia and the Demiurge that I carved and photographed without any special flair for lighting or scenery, just for memory. In a way, this statue marked a turning point — the moment I decided I wanted to create larger figurines with more intricate details and multiple characters. Designing it this time was effortless and joyful. The concept seemed to assemble itself in my mind. Sophia, whose flowing hair embodies the cosmos and our world, and the Demiurge, being born from her braid, appear to dance a cosmic tango together.

Hathor Pen and ink on paper 2024

Called by her original name, 'Hwt Hrw' translates to House of Horus as according to myths, she is the mother or consort of Horus. First, Hathor is the goddess of fertility symbolized by the cow horns and correspondence with the Sycamore tree (the white sap of the tree reminds of breast milk). She is also a protector of women and a goddess of beauty and sensuality. Hathor's energy is found in the sound of a lyre, the movement of a woman's hips dancing or the act of wearing make-up. She is also part of a goddess triad together with Sekhmet and Bastet as they can be interpreted as 3 sides of the same archetype.
