late, but better late than never, right? A number of headcanons I use for the Wraith in my fanfiction, All Living Things Must Feed (read it pls im starving for validation)
- Being gay isn’t unusual for Wraith at all, but they do stigmatise relationships between different castes
- Wraith are super physical with each other. (Mainly because of that one guy in “Outsiders” who walked over to his bro and gingerly whispered in his ear, that was completely adorable)
- Wraith hair is thinner than human hair, and this generally softer. But they also have a lot more individual hairs than humans.
- Wraith purr when in a pleasant situations. Young Wraith actually purr when feeding.
- Feeding organs are super sensitive. You can hurt them real bad there, but you can also make them feel really good. They also have cartilage-y stingers in there, that come out when feeding, and cause the trademark wound.
- when a Wraith starts a romantic affair, it’s common that they rename their mate. Queens like doing that to their consorts especially.
- Wraith have lower body temperature and blood pressure than humans. They also breathe slower.
- Most of the nonverbal communication they achieve through conveying emotion through telepathy, they translate to non.telepaths via growly-snarly-huffy noises.
- Most Wraith that actually have Wraith upbringing are very literal minded. Like... hilariously so.
- sibling bonds between Queens mean a whole fuckin’ lot. Also, Wraith moms are fiercely protective of their children. Like, Lioness-level of protective. Even the most cruel Queen will love her children eternally.
- They remain very stoic from a facial expression-standpoint, but they emote a lot with their hands. When they’re upset, uncomfortable or angry, they will flex their feeding hands. (I base this off Todd/Guide going all flexy at the end of “The Queen”, when Teyla tells him to stay tf in line)
The Vampires used to be scattered all over their homeworld, as an ancient, genetic anomaly that befalls every other generation a few times.
Helena, a few hundred years old at the time, met Ivory, the stranded Wraith Queen, and began developing the first blueprints for the vampiric base ships with her, while also uniting her kin, together with Euridice.
Once the first prototype was completed, Helena and Ivory took to the stars, followed after a few years by Euridice.
For a while, Vampire-kin worked together, but soon, factions crystallized themselves out, and fleets formed. While they were all considered friendly to each other, they quickly became independant from Helena.
They are now considered a nomadic, spacefaring race, much like the Wraith, and only return to their homeworld for nostalgic or personal reasons.
FEEDING
Vampires live of blood. Not necessarily human blood, but they cannot feed on animals, or their own kin. While that sort of blood isn’t toxic, it doesn’t sustain them.
To feed, they ensnare their prey by either physically knocking them out, or briefly stunning them with a blast on mental energy. Then, they open the main artery on the neck, and suck their prey’s blood.
That is not necessarily lethal, as Vampires don’t require enough blood to kill at a time, but some do it anyway.
Their base ships usually hide away during Wraith cullings, and steal away a few dozen humans for themselves, effectively blaming the Wraith for their deeds, as they value secrecy.
Some base ships have their human prisoners fed on multiple times before killing them, others feed once and release them back to their homeworld once they recover, which includes a complicated labeling and logistics system.
Regular food is no option for them, as their digestive tracts cannot process it. It, at best, makes them throw up.
ANATOMY
In addition to their long and sharp canines, Vampires are nigh-identical to humans, allthough most of their internal organs aren’t functional. When well fed, a Vampire will regenerate as quickly as a Wraith.
Their cells renew themselves, causing them not to age. A rare genetic condition makes these cells produce nigh-endless amounts of energy, which manifest as heat. There is only one recorded case of this mutation. (Erinya)
Vampires are most easily distinguished by their cold skin undertones, sometimes more prominent, sometimes less. Their eyes are usually a lot more pigmented than human eyes, causing unnatural-looking colors and intensities. Since they’re nocturnal, their eyes give off a faint glow in the dark.
REPRODUCTION
Since Vampires are suspected to have mutated from some inbetween form of Wraith and Humans, they can infect humans with their affliction, allthough this was never attempted with a Wraith.
To do that, the vampire usually drains the human in question, and gives them a transfusion of their own, effectively replacing human blood with vampire blood. Some also inject bone marrow to speed up the process. Accidental transformations cannot happen.
Humans who were turned are considered ‘Half-Bloods’, while a Vampire that was either born like this, or mutated on their own, is considered a Pure-Blood’. The only difference between them is that a Half-Blood is fertile, while a Pure-Blood only has limited fertility.
A child with a Half-Blood and a Pure-Blood parent is a Pure-blood.
Two Half-Bloods will produce a human with a chance of mutating into a Pure-Blood.
Two Pure-Bloods cannot reproduce.
SOCIETY
Vampire society is simple and democratic. Their Captains are elected by the crew, and live off their crew’s trust. Should that trust break for whatever reason, the Captain is disposed of, and a new one is elected.
A well-liked Captain, however, enjoys their crew’s full loyalty and care. often turning the entire ship into a big community, bonding intimately with their fellow Vampires.
Captains are leaders, but they are hardly authoritarian.
Vampires crave contact. They are social creatures, and quickly fall apart when seperated from their kin. Half-Bloods often consider their makers mentors, or even parental figures. and transformations happen consentually. Non-consenting humans that are transformed are considered victims of abuse, and are sheltered especially.
Gender plays very little role in vampiric society, and most Vampires are polyamorous, often creating big groups of lovers of any gender on their ships.
TECHNOLOGY
Vampiric tech is derived of Wraith Technology, although the organic aspect is lesser in their version. Each base ship is different, often picking up bits and pieces from other culture’s technology, to meld with their own.
Base ships are generally very similar to Wraith Cruisers, to the untrained eye, which allows them to easily trick humans into thinking they’re being culled.
Many of their access- and security systems are programmed to react to vampiric blood, and often require blood being drawn to allow access.

And CAS screens of Shine, Silverlight, and Erinya.
the fun thing about Shine and Silverlight is that Shine has genuine issues with his facial scars, since Wraith very rarely scar, due to their natural healing ability, while Silverlight is basically the underwear model equivalent of the Wraith.
Then again, Shine is a Blade, a warrior, while Silverlight is a Cleverman, a Scientist, which means that Shine is technically in a more valued caste.
So Shine is like “What the hell, you’re so pretty, what do you even want with me” and Silverlight is like “notice me senpai” and i love it.
Silverlight was named for the silvery shine of his hair when he works on a console, because of the light the screen sheds on him, and Shine thought he looked like an actual angel.
Shine, on the other hand, was named for the eager glint, the shine in his eyes when he looks at Silverlight.
I have no business loving these two so much, they aren’t even main characters wth
