I'm so basing my vampire illithid on a vampire squid! :D They will be a bit paler, but they just need the "ears"! 🦑❤️
Hear me out on this concept for a D&D character: a vampiric illithid (undead mind flayer) named Alumar, who is a thieving bard & has a tiny yet trusty mindwitness named Teuthis. A continued thread.
Alumar can’t use mind control techniques (due to their undead nature), which is why they have chosen music to charm & fight instead, as it’s the closest to mind control as they can get anymore.
They are known to have a huge knowledge of music from different planes & their personal life goal is to learn about all types of music to eventually finish writing „The Multiverse’s Guide to Music“.
Alumar’s chosen instrument is an accordion & Teuthis has a trombone. He can’t play it very well, but you just know that he tries his absolute best. He’s a good orb-shaped tentacle boi. Also yes, their shared favourite musician is Weird Al.
Alumar always has the instinct of eating the brains of rival bards (mostly to possibly gain knowledge of new types of music), but tries not to, should their current adventure party insist that they shouldn’t.
They are known to improvise diss-tracks for opponents. But they are also known to carefully plan out diss-tracks for bigger treats, should they ever have to fight them.
There is also a high chance of them communicating through song lyrics during fights, especially through medley’s of several songs, that surprisingly make them make more sense than when they talk normally.
Also, their issue of having to both consume blood & brains to survive is solved by their party letting them consume opponents. Either during or after fights. They aren’t really that picky & way more patient than you’d normally expect from a mind flayer.
In conclusion: Alumar & Teuthis are good vampire squid bard bois & I love them very much.
