Kamek the magikoopa, after another bowser plan goes wrong (my guess is this is after Super Mario Wonder) recalls the the time bowser used mario power ups to become meowser(cat power up) and also using double cherries to duplicate himself. and begins making versions of the power ups we know for bowser, plus some original ones that references some loyal allies of the forces of bowser.
the problem? A Bigger, Badder, and Older villain of the mushroom kingdom shows up and basically conquers the area of princess's peaches castle and such. And mario and luigi and the usual additional toad hero's? turned to stone.

Kamek has developed various power ups, and ways to use existing ones, for Bowser. And with their aid, Bowser has conquered the Mushroom Kingdom. Only to face a new threat as Princess Peach and the pesky plumbers flee before him, running into a wave of magic that turns them into statues, not bricks like in SMB1.
Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings are kidnapped, and Bowser is NOT thrilled. Originally, he tries to face the threats as he is, but he has to start using the power-ups to win more and more as he gets deeper in.
He has to call in the former enemies for help, once they are returned from being stone, as there are times when he cannot fit into the solution for the stage. He begins to grudgenly appreciate them as they help him get his kids back, and take care of them.
He refuses the title of hero, multiple times. Until the final battle, when his kids are all calling him their hero, and then he gets an ultimate power-up.
The enemy is driven back, and he must now face the members of his alliance… and thank them for their help. This could be the start of a peace between them, or they could return to their war, with new rules.
