Honestly sometimes I wonder if I would be good at drawing if I didn’t give up when I was a kid 😬 like I always told my mom I wanted to be an artist but she would always shut down my idea that I stopped drawing afterwards because I thought it was useless.

Oh man anon, i'm really so so sorry that happened to you and I really can't put into words how bad that made me feel. Parents discouraging their kids from making/participating in art because it's 'useless' is truly one of the shittiest things in our society. It's really common here; I have kids straight up telling me to my face they're not going to submit work because their parents don't think art is important. My parents themselves were the same, but I was just too stubborn to be changed lol. I hate that this is the situation in the world rn, but at the same time, I think it'll be unfair of me to say that these parents have bad intentions. Because it IS true that pursuing art in our hypercapitalist society is simply not the most pragmatic of choices.

However, anon, I hope you will remember that art is a skill, and just like any other skill, the more you practice, the better you will get at it!!! You can still be an artist now. I myself didn't really touch digital art (or any kind of non-traditional illustration at all, really) until like two years ago when COVID started and we were all trapped at home with no access to my usual art materials. It might have been not too difficult for me to pick up because I am formally trained in drawing and hence have much more experience, but I have learnt so much more since then and have improved so much, if I may say so myself. Like literally I cannot emphasise enough that it is NEVER too late to start, especially for art.

It doesn't even have to be good. Do it for the enjoyment! Do it because it's fun! Being 'good' at it will happen eventually!

hey so i know you always say to use reference to draw but i never knew how to use it??? like i always feel like i'm just copying stuff and not improving for real. could you explain? (sorry if you already answered i don't know how this works)

You should use multiple references to inform and inspire your drawing, not COPY from ONE reference.

Yo yo yo master VP! (I'm so srry) Anyway...ok so for some reason whenever I use reference I feel like my creativity is a bit limited and I can't push my art. How do you think I can use references effectively?

Omg “master VP” that’s amazing.

I know what you mean!! I think a fix could be using multiple references instead of just one - that way it won’t be copying the one reference you use, and you can culminate many ideas and inspirations into one picture. I know for school assignments we have to collect hundreds of reference images for one drawing, that makes me feel creative. I hope that helps!
