A novel for M R James fans who sometimes want something a little more modern and edgy from their weird fiction
Hey peeps, so here’s a recommendation from me!
The inestimable Alys Earl (my eternal best friend and Bad Influence), is funding the publication of their debut novel. What is it, you ask? Well, it’s gothic horror, featuring vampires in the Stoker sense, and while it is hella queer, I’d be hesitant to recommend it just as a queer novel, because it’s also so much more. (It just so happens that several of the principle characters aren’t straight, and that the author is NB.)
Time’s Fool is a novel about monstrosity, about desire and communication. It’s about the self we present to the world and the needs we whisper to ourselves in the darkness. It is about honesty and the fear of honesty. It is about the things we refuse - refuse to say, refuse to seek, refuse to believe - because sometimes, ignoring those things is all that keeps us sane.
Currently, Time’s Fool is crowdfunding for publication in paperback, with all pledges being taken in GBP - which means that if you’re not from the UK, the currency conversion is very much in your favour right now.
This is a novel that’s been years in the making, and it definitely needs it’s moment. Perhaps not in the sunlight, but it would certainly be fitting for it to haunt your shelves, and you can help make that happen. The world needs more queer fiction, and what better than queer fiction written by an NB author about proper vampires?
