Open Character: Matthew "Matt" Murdock | Biologically Enhanced Human | Lawyer | Alignment: S.H.I.E.L.D. | 32 years old

After witnessing his father’s involvement in a crime, Matt Murdock ran from the sight, one of the last he would ever see. A forklift attempting to avoid hitting the fleeing boy, pierced a barrel filled with biochemicals, spraying it on Matt’s eyes, after the driver attempted to avoid him. The accident caused the loss of the use of his eyes, however Matt’s other senses heightened - he gained enhanced hearing, more attune senses of smell, taste, and touch. The chemicals also affected his brain, allowing him to retain and process more information than a normal person. With his father feeling guilty for his son’s accident, they made a promise to each other, a silent promise, to never give up. Matt began to study, and his father returned to his career as a boxer until he was killed by gangsters for failing to take a fall during a fight. As nobody cared for his father’s death, Matt vowed to find justice, and stand up for those others wouldn’t.

With his father gone, Matt was contacted by and received training from Stick, a blind ninja master. He was taught several forms of martial arts, which he mixed with the boxing style his father practised, to create a new style of fighting previously unseen. Whilst Matt had alone trained his senses, it was Stick who taught him to hone them, allowing Matt to use echolocation in order to create a radar, which let his mind create images of in his head. This sight also allowed Matt to understand the inner workings of many things much easier, as the tiny sounds each part made could be picked up by his ears and recreated in his mind. Keeping his promise to his father Matt studied law, along with continuing his training from Stick, and eventually finished law school. He started a law firm with his good friend Foggie Nelson, only representing innocent clients, but when justice was not found in the courtroom, that’s when Matt really put his abilities to use. At night he would become Daredevil, and hunt down those that had evaded justice.

Matt met and quickly fell in love with a woman named Elektra Nachios but the romance was short lived. Elektra’s family had connections to the notorious Kingpin, resulting in her death. Matt took out the assassin that killed her, Bullseye, as well as the Kingpin, both ending up incarcerated. Initially, Matt was hopeful about his future role as his alter ego Daredevil, but soon after gave up the life of crimefighting, thinking it a risk to the other important people in his life. But now something has been happening, something that has caught Matt’s attention, and is having him consider a return to the shadows as the guardian Devil.

What is evil? Is it inherent in a person, or does it come from the way they were raised? For Kurt Adler, it is both. 

Born to a pair of HYDRA agents, he was raised in the fold of evil. The mentality of Aryan superiority was instilled in him from a young age, and Kurt was always told he was the perfect human. The perfect soldier.

Having the advantage of being trained and shaped since birth, when Kurt was finally of age, he flew through the ranks of HYDRA, surpassing everyone's expectations, including his parents. He made sure he excelled in everything he was taught and he soon became one of their top agents. 

When HYDRA first started planning their attacks on S.H.I.E.L.D., Kurt was the first to sign up. SHIELD had the tesseract, and he would secure his place at the top by retrieving it for HYDRA. However, HYDRA's plans were put on hold when the supernatural threat against New York increased. Their interests readily shifted from the tesseract towards the supernatural and Madame Hydra promptly sent Kurt to initiate contact with the vampires and demons, hoping to use them to their advantage and wipe out S.H.I.E.L.D. once and for all.

Open Character: James "Logan" Howlett | Mutant | Alignment: Avengers Initiative | 100+ years old

The mutant who would come to be known simply as "Logan" was born James Howlett, the second son of Elizabeth Howlett and the illegitimate son of the Howlett's grounds-keeper, Thomas Logan. As a boy, James was notably frail and prone to bouts of allergic attack and was largely neglected by his mother. One night, Thomas, in a drunken stupor and armed with a shotgun, invaded the Howlett Estate with his son, Viktor. In an attempt to stop him, John, Sr. was shot in the head. James had just entered the room when this occurred and his mutation finally manifested; bone claws extended from the backs of his hands and he attacked the intruders with uncharacteristic ferocity, killing Thomas. Already an emotionally disturbed woman, Elizabeth, completely unhinged, drove James away and took her life, immediately afterward, with a blast from Thomas' gun.

After many decades of traveling across the world with his brother, most of which were spent as a soldier for one country or another, Logan found himself drafted into a Black Ops squad run by the CIA, called Team X during which he worked on various espionage assignments: these included missions with Captain America in Nazi Germany, and several long term missions in Vladivostok, Russia, where he worked with Nick Fury before he was appointed to the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. After several years of service in Team X, due to his rapid healing and other characteristics he was drafted into the Weapon X program. Though he initially refused, the staged death of his lover, Kayla Silverfox at the hand of his brother, drove Logan's desire to avenge her and accept his invitation into the program. It was there that Logan became Wolverine, his bone claws transformed into into admantium ones with the element coating his entire body making him virtually indestructible.

After exacting his revenge and losing his memory in the process, he spent many years traveling alone until at long last he found himself caught in the world of the mutants that he'd tried so hard to stay away from. He soon found himself with some place to call home again; with the X-Men. However, he was uprooted once again when Director Fury cashed in a favor and asked him to report to S.H.I.E.L.D. to face an unfamiliar threat, one of the supernatural nature.

Open Character: Wade Wilson | Mutant | Mercenary | Alignment: Neutral | Age Unknown

A disfigured and mentally unstable mercenary , this aptly named “merc with a mouth” is famous for his chaotic and improvised fighting style. Not much is known about his past except that he was the disturbed and already partly insane son of a decorated war hero, often daydreaming childish and dangerous ideas, spurring him to the mercenary lifestyle. In America, Wade met and fell in love with mutant teenage prostitute Vanessa Carlysle, with whom he shared dreams of a better life. Learning that he had contracted cancer, Wilson broke up with his girlfriend Vanessa rather than force her to remain with a terminally ill man. He even gave up his chemo treatments, not wishing to prolong things.

In Canada, he was offered hope in the form of Department K, a special weapons development branch of the Canadian government. Wilson became a test subject in Department K’s branch of the joint U.S./Canadian superhuman enhancement project, the Weapon X Program; his cancer was temporarily arrested via the implantation of a healing factor derived from another Department K agent, the mutant adventurer Wolverine. Most of his past is unknown even to himself because of his mental condition.

Though not a team player, once the supernatural threat towards New York grew, he was bribed with a hefty sum by Nick Fury to come and work for S.H.I.EL.D. and assist with wiping out the threat posed to the city.

An ex medical student, Lucas Harper was the son of Henry Davies a renowned police officer hot on the local mafia’s trail. It was only when the mafia began to ally themselves with the vampires that Henry became a source of their problem; the mafia sent a clean-up crew to take care of him and his family. Lucas and his twin sister were away at medical school and by the time they’d caught wind of what had happened to their family they were too late. The two arrived to find their house in ashes and their bank accounts completely empty; they were homeless and broke. Lucas did what he could to survive, working odd jobs here and there while living with his sister in rundown motels, their hopes of a medicinal career had died along with their parents and now they had sworn revenge against the people who’d taken everything from them.

After two years of intense physical training and planning, Lucas’s strategy to infiltrate the mafia and kill their leader had finally come to fruition, he joined the local mafia and became another strong arm. He met Nick Fury when S.H.I.E.L.D. launched a full-scale attack on the mafia and their supernatural associates. It was then that he joined S.H.I.E.L.D. under the condition that his sister got protection from the mafia. He successfully ran his own team; strike team Foxtrot under the code-name Griffon until he was re-assigned to head of security for Stark Industries.

Open Character: Erik Selvig | Human | Astrophysicist | Alignment: S.H.I.E.L.D. | 60 years old

FC: Stellan Skarsgard

An astrophysicist and mentor of Jane Foster and Darcy Lewis. Dr. Selvig was a Professor of Theoretical Astrophysics at Culver University. His notes on thermonuclear astrophysics proved useful to understanding the Tesseract. He also worked with Bruce Banner prior to Banner’s accident with gamma radiation. He first came into contact with Thor Odinson during Thor’s exile to earth when Jane Foster's van collided with Thor, who fortunately was unharmed due to his god-like invulnerability. Erik remained skeptical and thought Thor delusional. However, he later befriended Thor, first securing his release from a temporary S.H.I.E.L.D. compound, and then drinking heavily with him at a town bar, prompting Thor to claim that Selvig had "made his ancestors proud." They parted company after Thor's true nature had been fully revealed and Selvig was finally able to see for himself the being behind the myth.

Sometime later, Erik Selvig was summoned to the presence of Nick Fury who opened a storage case, revealing a glowing cube. When Selvig asked what it was, Fury replied that it represented a significant source of power, if only they could find a way to tap it. Selvig accepted the challenge of investigating the object, while the apparition of Loki (who had been controlling him throughout the encounter) looked on with keen interest. Selvig continued working with S.H.I.E.L.D. on the Tesseract until Loki took it into his possession, using his magical influence to control Selvig. He worked alongside Loki against his will, but when the effects wore off, he theorized a way to close the portal Loki had created – the same portal that had allowed Loki’s alien allies to come to earth and attack New York. After the battle was won, Thor took possession of the Tesseract, taking it beyond human reach.

After the battle, Selvig returned to S.H.I.E.L.D and continued working in their science department where he convinced them to take on his colleague Jane Foster. Their primary focus remained in finding a way to travel to Loki’s world without the Tesseract.

Nick Fury was the eldest of three children who  grew up in the neighborhood known as Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan. His father was a United States citizen who enlisted in the United Kingdom's Royal Flying Corps during World War II. Nick was an amateur boxer through the Police Athletic League where he also learned marksmanship. Fury eventually joined the U.S. army where he quickly rose through the ranks. He met Howard Stark, who told Nick he had been a friend of his father's during the war. The two were both skilled pilots but Howard had also been an inventor and scientist. 

Stark took a young Nick Fury under his wing and Fury was eventually recruited to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Fury segued into the CIA as an espionage agent, gathering information in Korea. Soon after his promotion to Colonel, Fury recommended the recruitment of married agents Richard and Mary Parker, who would go on to become the parents of Fury's occasional superhero ally Spider-Man. During his time at the CIA, Fury and Stark were contacted by a mysterious High Council. The group had enhanced knowledge and seemingly supernatural influences. The Council tasked Stark and Fury with creating the group that would become known as S.H.I.E.L.D, claiming that they knew the final fate of man and that their mission was to ensure nothing threatened humanity before it occurred. The High Council have been involved from afar ever since, although the members change. Fury and Stark ran S.H.I.E.L.D together up until Howard Stark's untimely death. 

As director of S.H.I.E.L.D, Fury acted as a liaison between the C.I.A and super-powered individuals. He went on to create The Avengers Initiative for this same purpose. During The Avengers' first mission, Fury assisted in faking the death of Agent Phil Coulson. Coulson was shot by Loki and reasoned that the group needed a common tragedy to bring them together. Fury reluctantly agreed. Coulson, William North and Fury were the only two who knew about this arrangement.  

Soon after numerous S.H.I.E.L.D. agents began mysteriously dying and the supernatural threat to New York became more prominent, Fury was contacted by a man named Rupert Giles, head of something called The Watcher's Council. Giles explained that he worked for a group called The Slayer Organization that fights against supernatural threats. Giles arranged for Fury to meet with the Organization's highest ranking officer, a young woman named Buffy Summers. 

However, his initial disagreement with the World Security Council didn't go unnoticed and soon he was demoted to Handler status. Currently, Nick Fury is the Handler of Strike Team Alpha, commonly knows as the Avengers Initiative.

Open Character: Bruce Banner/The Hulk | Human (Gamma Infected) | Alignment: Avengers Initiative | 39 years old

A gifted scientist and expert in gamma radiation, when attempting to recreate the Super Soldier Serum that created Captain America, Bruce Banner accidentally exposed himself to dangerous levels of gamma radiation. The dose transformed him into a super-powered monster that came to be known as ‘The Hulk’. After injuring his girlfriend, Betty Ross and her father, General Thaddeus Ross, he became a wanted man and was forced to go on the run. For several years he was obsessed with curing himself. He tracked down other scientists online, attempting to find someone who could help him with his condition. He also spent several years training with meditation experts in order to prevent another outburst. In the beginning, Bruce found his transformations hard to control. He lost himself inside the monster known as the Hulk, leaving none of his human personality traits when he transformed. It was only when his Hulk form came into contact with Betty Ross that the human in him resurfaced and he found himself trying to protect her. 

When the experimental super-soldier Emil Blonsky demanded that the scientist Banner was collaborating with dose him with gamma radiation too, he turned into an abomination even worse than the Hulk. Desperate for more power, Blonsky went on a tear through Manhattan. Realizing he was the only one strong enough to stop The Abomination, Banner made the decision to willingly turn into The Hulk. This was the first time he was able to control his abilities. After winning the battle, Banner was on the run once more. No longer obsessed with curing himself, he tried to stay clear of society but focused on helping people, acting as an unregistered physician in poverty-stricken slums. He did this until Natasha Romanoff found him and recruited him to help track down the Tesseract Loki had stolen, reasoning that the artifact let off trace gamma radiation and that Bruce could find it more easily than regular humans. 

Following the Chitauri Invasion, Bruce had to work even harder to isolate himself from society given the media coverage the attack on Manhattan inspired. On Tony's request, he stayed at Stark Tower but continued to travel and work in poverty and war stricken countries until one night, a new threat took over the small village in Haiti he had visiting. The monsters of Haitian legend were real, and they were attacking. Bruce tried to help and cure as many people as possible, but found himself unable to help. He took several blood samples from recently turned “vampires” and was bitten more than once. It seemed the creatures had a distaste for his blood, however, and none of them drank for longer than a split second before fleeing. Reasoning that he might be able to do more good if he could get his samples to a real lab, Bruce contacted Tony but it was already too late; New York had succumbed to an army of supernatural forces. So, he packed his bags and returned to New York, hoping to assist Tony and the Avengers in riding the city of the new threat.
