It had been days since Loki left and Tony was starting to get worried. Even though his fiance assured him that he’d return safe and sound, Tony had doubts. Loki being pregnant was not exactly conducive to him being on the battlefield. Tony didn’t care if Loki said his Assassins needed him. Tony needed him too…
He was working on his suits when he felt another presence in the lab. At first he thought it was Loki come home. The god was the only other one with access and he tended to sneak up on Tony unintentionally. So he turned, seeing who he thought was Loki at first. A man in a long white hooded jacket with green trim and tails, a green sash with a sword and various sized pouches, vambraces with the traditional hidden blades strapped to them…
"Jesus, babe, you gotta stop do—" But then Tony noticed something. This new comer didn’t have the same build or height at Loki. Uh-Oh. He pulled off the goggles he was wearing, worry filling him. "Sorry about that. You’re one of the guys Loki works with… Is he okay?"
The assassin stayed silent for a second, as if sizing Tony up and down. “Man of Iron, I have grave news for you. No, the Master is not okay,” he finally said, a light but worn down voice coming from behind the hood. “He was wounded in battle and was admitted to one of our medical centers. I was sent to fetch you…. He’s been asking for you.”
And that’s when Tony felt his world crashing down around him. Loki was hurt, his baby and his love could be dying… He had to grab a nearby table to keep himself upright. There’s no way this could be happening. Loki was the best Assassin there was. He was their teacher, their Master, their leader (well not really, but that was another issue). Tony couldn’t see how Loki would have been so careless as to have gotten hurt. Tony could feel an anxiety attack starting. His breath was coming shorter, his pulse was racing, his vision was blurring—!
No, this wasn’t the time to start breaking down, Loki needed him. So Tony picked himself up, ran a hand through his hair, straightened his shirt out, and took a deep breath.
"Well, Zoro, lead the way."
Okay, Tony swore that when Loki got better, he’d make sure his fiance taught him how to freerun properly. It hadn’t been something Tony had done since childhood, when his mom’s friend tried to teach him. And now pushing 50 and not very well in practice… It wasn’t a recipe for success when a seasoned vet to freerunning insisted they use that method to get to the medical base Loki was in. Still Tony had to admit, it was faster than driving.
As soon as Tony stepped through the doors, he was surrounded by white jacketed people, all in varying states of disarray. It looked like they’d all just gotten off the battle field. Just on look at them and Tony could see that they were all young. No wonder Loki was so fiercely protective of them…
"This way, Man of Iron," the first assassin said, grabbing Tony’s arm and pulling him through the halls. Tony made a mental note to clear up the whole ‘man of iron’ thing later.
It only took a few minutes of twists and turns and then Tony was standing in front of a large window looking into a hospital room. Inside was Loki laying on the bed, a large bandage around his chest that he assumed was white at one point, now stained dark red with the god’s blood. Tony felt his heart starting to speed up again, but willed himself to not break down. Instead he fueled it into anger and directed it to the group of Assassin’s that had formed outside the room.
"Why isn’t anyone helping him?!" Tony snapped, whipping around to glare at them all. They all jumped a little and took a step back. "Call your medical officers! Get a surgeon! You can’t just let your Master die!"
"Our medical staff has done all they can," someone, a female, said. "There’s no one here properly trained to perform the surgery on him that he needs and no one’s willing to risk it."
"So you’d let him die?" Tony took another deep breath and looked at the girl that spoke up. Her white coat was detailed with red instead of green and her hood was down. She didn’t even look like she was out of high school. "You, what’s your name?"
"Jones, sir," she responded.
"First name?"
"…. Mellisa."
"Okay, Mel, answer me this, any medical training?"
"Very little sir."
"Stead hands?"
"Yes, sir."
"Then you’re will me. Anyone else with medical training?" Tony looked around at the crowd and one hand was raised, a boy stepping forward this time. "Name?"
"Donavin, sir. James."
"Jimmy! Great. You go find me everything that’ll be needed for this. Tweezers, needle, thread, a numbing agent, you know the drill. Mel, get bandages and ointments, something to help it heal when we’re done. You have ten minutes while I asses the damage. Got it?"
"Yes sir!" The two assassins bowed to him and ran off in different directions. Tony turned to the crowd again, scrutenizing them. He pointed at one and waved him forward.
"Timothy Williams, sir," the newest assassin responded without prompting.
"Timmy," Tony nodded at him, pleased. "Find three more people that you trust and get me a damage report. Numbers dead, damage done, everything and anything I’ll need to figure out what happened. Even if you think it’s not worth noting, note it. Understood?"
"Yes, sir!"
"Good, dismissed," Tony said, waving him off. Timmy ran off and Tony turned back to the crowd. "And where the hell is William Miles?!"
"Gone, sir," a random voice popped up. "Too busy trying to find his son."
"Good for nothing lout," Tony huffed. "All of you, return to your rooms, or wherever you’re needed. Everything’s under control here now. Shoo."
He didn’t wait for a response. Tony just walked into Loki’s room and pulled the blinds on the window. Jesus that’d been a rush. Loki had talked to him before about needing a new leader in this place and now Tony could see why. Sure, he himself had volunteered the last time it was brought up, just on a whim, but he never thought he could take to it like a fish to water.
"Come on, enough of that Tony. Loki needs you." Tony pulled himself together and went over to his fiance, carefully inspecting his wounds. It was a bullet that just grazed his right lung enough to make breathing hard, if not near impossible. "That bullet's gotta come out..."
"No shit, Sherlock." The weak voice made him jump a little. Tony looked up only to see Loki smiling at him. It was small and strained, but it was still a smile. "You came."
"Of course I did, I'm not gonna let you die," Tony replied with a smile, kissing the god on the forehead. "Now you just rest and we'll take care of you. When you wake up, you'll be good as new."
"I'll hold you to that." Loki gave him one last smile before drifting back into unconsciousness. It was just about perfect timing too because that's when Mellisa and Jim came back into the room.
"We got everything you need, Sir," Mellisa said curtly, her arms full of blankets and bandages.
"Good." Tony nodded, taking the bundle. "Then let's get to work."

To Tony's immense satisfaction, the surgery itself was uneventful and went rather quickly. They got Loki stitched up and his wounds dressed and the two assassins left Tony to be alone with their master. He was still baffled by that, how these kids just instantly trusted him and listened to him without a second thought. Did he really exude that kind of aura? Cool.
"Knock, knock." Tony turned to see that first assassin standing in the doorway, the one that grabbed him from his home.
"Ya know I never got your name," the genius sniffed, glaring at him.
"My name is Zane Larson, I'm Loki's son." That's when he pulled his hood down and Tony's jaw dropped. The kid looked like a carbon copy of Loki, just older. Green eyes (that actually leaned more towards hazel), pale skin and long black hair kept back in a pony tail. The only difference that Tony could see was the height. Zane was a bit smaller.
"Well now I see it," Tony said with a disinterested shrug. No, he wasn't jealous that his fiance has an adult kid. Nope. No way.
"Adopted son."
"Better."
Zane just rolled his eyes. "Thank you for helping him."
"The least I can do."
"You really took command back there. Quite a sight to watch."
"Just did what I had to do."
"Are you always this modest?"
"Nope."
Zane sighed and sat down across from Tony, backwards on the chair. "I'm going to be frank with you. Mr. Stark--"
"Tony, please, I'm gonna be your stepdad soon."
"--We need your help." That made Tony shut up. Zane looked relieved. "Or rather, we need you. William, as you must already know, is a weak, ineffective leader. We need someone stronger, someone who will be able to lead us. Someone like you."
"Someone strong? Or someone who has access to a Templar headquarters?" Tony cocked an eyebrow at him. He'd known SHIELD was Templar controlled from the moment he met Nick Fury.
"Both." Well at least Zane's honest, Tony thought. "That's what will help us. More than you know. We're not asking you to betray them, we're not asking you to spy on them for us."
"Then what are you asking me?"
"To lead us."
Tony leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms and legs. It was a defensive posture, and he knew Zane would know that. "Look I'm flattered, but I've got other things I need to think about. Like getting the reactor out of my chest or watching over your dad and your soon to be baby brother or running my company or being Iron Man. Besides, there's no way I'm qualified to do this."
"The way you handled things today, I'd say you're more than qualified, Zane said with a smile so much like Loki's. He stood, straightening his jacket. "Think about it, Tony."
With that, Zane left, leaving Tony mostly alone with his thoughts.
Yuriko was dressed in a modern take on a kimono. Blood red silk that draped just right over her lithe frame with a slit to her waist and killer heels. Her long dark hair was down, framing her face and a silk flower that matched her kimono was tucked behind one ear. She earned many looks that night at the latest green energy presentation from Stark Industries but she had eyes for one man and one man only, Tony Stark himself. It wasn't just a physical attraction on her part, she needed him to further her plans, plans that had nothing to do with the future of green energy and everything to do with her dark past. Yuriko moved to his side as he circulated after his speech and bowed politely as was customary in the Japan she'd grown up in, years ago thanks to her healing factor. "Your speech was most enlightening, Mr Stark." she said by way of greeting, playing up her 'exotic' accent slightly.
