It was too much. He was spiraling. They’d both seen it time and again and there was nothing but to stop him dead. Angel had been watching him pace but now he moved into his path, blocking the trudging circle he’d fallen into. Without thinking about it he grabbed Husk by the shoulders and cupped his face with his upper set of hands. Purposely he rubbed his thumbs over his whiskers. They were sensitive and the attention to them was enough to make him falter in confusion. For good measure Angel bent and kissed him, lingering in the contact. Husk softened slightly under the attention but pulled away quickly. “What’re you doing?”
“What’s it look like? I’m distracting you.” Husk’s brow furrowed but he didn’t pull away. “You can’t do this.”
“Angel-“
“You can’t! It’s in the past now. We’re all here cause we’re shitty people, honey, and that’s okay but you’re doing better now and that’s what matters.”

The door behind him opened and he startled, jerking away from the map guiltily. No lines had been crossed, he's done nothing wrong, but the feeling of being under scrutiny came from people around him so often that it was almost automatic. Eugene smiled reassuringly at him and stepped aside for Queen Arianna. Flustered, Varian bowed at the waist. The Queen? He'd been waiting for the Queen herself? He heard the door close softly and his stomach flip flopped nervously.
