“Sonny?” Nick shoves past a couple of unis. This is a mess. Rain makes everything damp and hard to see. “Sonny, sweetheart, where are you?”
“Nick, I didn’t know you were back in New York.” Amanda says in shock.
“Where’s Sonny?”
She points toward the ambulance, where a body with a sheet pulled over its head is being loaded into an ambulance. Nick’s heart drops to his stomach. Then he sees Sonny standing off to the side with Olivia, shoulders curled inward. Something bad happened, he got that from the messy text Sonny sent him of an address, but now he thinks he knows. Whoever died, Sonny’s blaming himself for it.
“Sonny?” He calls again. Sonny’s head snaps up and he visibly relaxes. Nick runs up to him and pulls him into his arms. He’s warm despite the chill. “I’ve got you, sweetheart. I’m here. I’ve got you.”
“I couldn’t save him-”
“Shhh, it’s okay. It’s not your fault.”
Over Sonny’s shoulder, he sees Olivia, Amanda, and Fin all looking at him like they’ve seen a ghost. When Sonny finally pulls back, Nick tilts his head up for a brief kiss. The rain is heavier now, but he doesn’t mind. It’s been years since he’s done this. He’s only been in New York for a couple weeks, since he has to take care of his mother while she’s sick, but he and Sonny have reconnected since running into each other at Starbucks one morning. One thing led to another, and after a couple dates, they picked up right where they left off when Nick broke up with Sonny before going to California.
“I’m taking you home, okay?”
Sonny nods, and so does Olivia behind him.
He leads Sonny away from the crime scene and toward the subway so that he can relax from the undoubtedly awful day.
