Soapstone is soft enough to be carved with hand tools. With practice and some guidance, a piece can be transformed into anything you can imagine. It's no wonder the art dates back thousands of years.
If you've never tried carving soapstone before, these Studiostone Creative animal kits are a great way for ages 8 to 108 to get started with this age-old activity. Designed and made in British Columbia by two Canadian sculptors, the kits come with everything you need, including a kid-safe carving file.

So, I've been trying to avoid amazon for the past few months and seeing what they've done to my precious silmarillion is the last straw but I don't know where else I can get affordable stim toys and larger/bulk amounts of things like pencil cases and lanyards in the uk.

Thrift Books sells new and gently used books, as well as movies, music and video games.
Abebooks also sells new and gently used books, as well as art and collectibles. They also specialize in rare books.
Betterworldbooks has a wide collection of genres, as well as movies and cds. They seems to be a bit on the pricey side, so I'd use this one if you can't find something on the other sites. They hype up their "you buy one, we give one" books program a lot, but there are other ways to get books to kids who can't afford them, like In the Book, First Book, and Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.
Half Price Books sells new and used books, music and movies, puzzles, gifts and stationary. The prices seen pretty reasonable, and they seem to have a lot of left-leaning stuff; the front page when I visited today had a book about American Marxism on the front page.
Also, there are used bookstores everywhere! Google the ones closest to you and support them. Brick and mortar stores are important, particularly ones that aren't big name chains. Please buy from the "big ones" only as a last resort. If you buy from local, independently owned stores, you keep a business alive and keep money from going into some CEO's pocket.
However, if you can't find a title anywhere else...Barnes and Noble is better than Amazon.

Btw if you want to stop supporting Amazon but don't know where else online to buy cheap books, bookfinder.com searches a bunch of different sites to find the cheapest price including US shipping and usually saves me $4-5 (vs just searching Amazon) every time I use it.
The StoryGraph is in beta but still a legit site to use to give Amazon-owned Goodreads the boot. It's designed to help find reading to fit your mood. You can export your GR info but it may take a while to import because people are trying to find alternatives to Amazon trash and the site is swamped right now.
