A great new tribute video to the Amazons in ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ created for Xenite Retreat 2025.

I often wonder if the show wasn’t a love story would they have focused more so on the Amazons and specifically Gabrielle as an Amazon Queen leading them… because here’s the thing about this…

They never actually had an Amazon Queen in Gabrielle.

They did in Ephiny.

They did in Cyane.

And even though she kept making mistakes - Varia too.

But Gabrielle - and I have wrote about this extensively before in my ‘The Art of Leading’ analysis - she was just so thoroughly attached to and dedicated to Xena that she never gave leading them as a Queen a real chance.

And I think if Gabrielle didn’t have Xena in her life…

She would have. She might have even been good at it.

It’s just sometimes I’m in two minds about what I wanted out of Xena. Their love story or stand alone Gabrielle. As I’ve said before, in the end, they sort of gave us both in their own weird and wonderful ways.

But the Amazons…. I feel like they were so neglected by Gabrielle and they never seemed to address this. It was never really a point of conflict when I feel it should have been because if I was in an Amazon tribe and she was my Queen, I’d be pretty pissed off she kept leaving us.

Gabrielle always chose Xena and I know we love this because we love them but… they could have had an episode where they actually confronted Gabrielle on this and explained that they weren’t happy about it.

It’s part of the reason I’d like to believe that when Xena stayed dead in ‘AFIN’ she returned to the Amazons to rule as Queen and stay for good because I believe she deserved a chance to prove that she was a good Queen because she was a wise leader. Just never a true one.

It’s not that she wasn’t capable of being a true one. It was just because she chose Xena every damn time.

So if she didn’t have to do that - would she be good?

I think so but I guess we’ll never know for sure because the TV show is not an Amazon story. It’s a love story.
