Another Year of Pissed-off Music, to Take to the Streets, or Down in the Dirt: Jonathan Shaw

In a year so full of ugly, vicious and mind-numbingly feckless behavior among the political and economic oligarchies, the need for underground art and culture that refuses to knuckle under has never been more urgent. I’ll spare you the details; you have all lived them, one way or another. Some folks, viewing the wreckage and venality from the dubious distances offered by the internet, like to mouth off about the social world being “post-truth.” For rebuttals, I’ll offer some of the best tunes on the records listed below: Puffer’s “Jimmy,” Blood Monolith’s “The Owl in Daylight,” Retirement’s “Next Time.” I could go on, but the records are all out there, waiting on you.

The songs are remorseless and relentless. That’s not to pronounce the music listed below entirely negative or negationist (well, there is that Uranium record…). Puffer’s Street Hassle is hands-down and fists-up the record of the year, and there are moments of heartfelt sentiment and yearning for more wide-open possibilities expressed during its uniformly excellent 28 minutes. But every bit of sweaty vulnerability and every glimmer of hard-won hope have their complements in the boiling anger and guttersnipe skepticism that power Puffer’s streetpunk sound.

Other significant records this year are more focused and malign in their affective charge. Malthusian’s blast of black/death on The Summoning Bell seems engaged with the psychological costs of living in absurdity; the band nods to Beckett, and I hear the echoes of his famous “I can’t go on, I’ll go on….” Sounds like my own consciousness in the middle of any given week this year. Uranium produced another aesthetic statement keyed in to the contours and textures of the year’s most horrific days. Check out “Concrete Tombs” from the noise act’s Corrosion of Existence, but be careful: that crypt door may swing shut behind you.

So: post-truth? Fuck that. We may not have the language to speak the totality, but it is. It may be very, very hard to process the tsunami of cynical, lunatic “information” and “content” that deluges us, every minute of every day. But there is still truth. I feel it when I hear a song that hits me with the force of “Jimmy,” or of Heteropsy’s “Methadone,” or of Who Pays’ genius cover of “Hard Times.” And I feel it when I hear the things we need to say (and shout, and sing) more than ever:

Down with fascism.

Smash all nationalisms.

Turn the music up.

Ameretat — S/T (La Vida Es un Mus)

Pitched somewhere between hardcore and noise rock and located somewhere between London and Tehran. As intense and fearless as all that sounds.

Blood Monolith — The Calling of Fire (Profound Lore)

Grinding death metal with a nasty crust congealing on its surface — and Shelby Lermo playing guitar. Nuff said.

Grave Hex — Vermian Death (Night-Terrors)

Old Skool Metal ov Death that the punks can mosh to. One of a few records this year that felt sort of…fun? Perhaps you don’t have these problems.

Heteropsy — Embalming (Caligari)

Nasty death-doom, shot through with moments of speed-metal splendor and noisy, chaotic bum-outs. The right soundtrack for any news report featuring members of the US Congress.

Malthusian — The Summoning Bell (Relapse)

Infernally precise, truculent and muscular black/death from Ireland. They sound serious about the absurd.

Puffer — Street Hassle (Static Shock)

Record of the year, to this grizzled old punk’s ears.

Retirement — Attention Economy (Iron Lung)

Mostly midtempo stompers so the kids can do that side-to-side. An excellent record that provides a strong argument that hardcore is not done with us yet.

Suffering Hour — Impelling Rebirth (Profound Lore)

A bracing, direct blast of black/death from Minnesota’s finest. Those guitars, though.

Uranium — Corrosion of Existence (Sentient Ruin Laboratories)

Like the Chernobyl miniseries, but less pleasant. Perhaps the scariest record of the year.

Who Pays — Hard Times (11 pm)

Sometimes all you need is some punk…

I just found my old weheartit blog ! Realizing how much a blog can be a snapshot of the thoughts i had throughout the years, stoping time by creating a way to go back to old paradigms I was in. It feels like i was a total different person, and at the same time i can recognize some constants. I wonder why we have such a need for eternity, even when it’s illusory. I think that’s why i named my blog “ameretat” : the allegory of immortality in ancient Zoroastrianism. I’m looking at the past just because it’s December 30th I guess...
