I think UsAmericans should stop blaming their education as a kid for their ignorance as an adult
"i wasn't spoon fed this in elementary school so now I'm incapable of learning it as a 30 year old" is not the reasonable justification you think it is.
Am I wrong or does the phrase "American privilege" imply Americans have privilege over all other people in all other countries? Cause that's just not true. I don't think Americans have privilege over me, a canadian, just because people know more about America than canada. Why not use the phrase "first world privilege"?
From what I’m picking up in the notes, it’s applying to hyper-visibility of American issues and events
Hyper-visibility isn’t an automatic privilege for everyone, especially when American media does everything in its power to change narratives and silence marginalized groups. We also see how other countries take events like the BLM protests and make them out to be just (Black)Americans being violent for no reason
You do bring up a point that first world countries in general are brought up in international media a lot more. But you know White Europeans hate these conversations, and admitting their privilege comes from white supremacist systems like in America
I'm honestly just. So annoyed with all those "Uwu America is so quirky and the only place that matters" posts that Tumblr is full of so your blog is so refreshing to see.
Lmao thank you the secret is that I don't live in America ☺️
Gah! You American crafters have no idea how lucky you are! Everything is catered to you, all the tutorials telling you how to get stuff, free shipping this and that, just the selection and availability of shit! No taxes on imported stuff. Everything’s in $ so no need to worry about exchange rates and conversion fees.
Not to mention that if you ever decide to sell shit, you can just do it in your own country. No dealing with international shipping.
COMPANIES IN AMERICA: we’re starting this cool new service that will help disabled people, here’s a free course on sign language so you can communicate with your HoH driver, we’re having a great sale, if you’re a girl of colour apply here and we will pay for your college, we will literally save every family from poverty if they get 10k retweets :)
THE SAME COMPANIES IN ANY OTHER COUNTRY: sorry this service is not available in your country :((((( maybe try living in an important place like the U-S-A instead of some shithole nobody cares about :) also here’s an ad in your language talking about all the great services we provide to americans only :) die!
Gringos lose their shit and bend over backwards trying to deny that American privilege is a thing because they have turned privilege and oppression into metrics to measure the moral of people, in where being oppressed makes you a better person and being privileged makes you evil and an acceptable target.
That's why so many people deny the existence of American privilege and/or insist that this privilege in particular is more nuanced than others, because by their own philosophy, accepting they have privilege would somehow make them bad people, and make them lose their "oppressed" card to use on internet arguments
And also because thinking about the fact that they live in a modern empire and have huge advantage over people in 'lesser' countries makes them uncomfortable so they ignore it, and/or try to pretend that all the people pointing out their privilege are white wealthy Europeans (cuz that would make them privileged themselves and easier to dismiss, because of the whole 'privilege makes you evil' thing)
