Go see her at SXSW in a couple weeks
Is this thing on? Been a lonnnnnng while, but I want to test the waters to see if there's an audience for country music on Tumblr 2023.
I've been making a weekly playlist in lieu of a radio show for a couple months now. Figure that'd be a good place to start.
If you like country music that's outside the mainstream, check out this playlist. It's full of new and recent releases. I kick it off with a classic country song and send it off with Willie Nelson. In between you'll find music from artists making country music in their own way with their own style. While the music changes every week, the playlist stays in the same spot. Plus, there's an archive where I retire the old playlists.
If you find something you like, let me know and give the artists a follow on instagram.

Simpaticunazzu: today I had the pleasure and the honor to meet the “Titan of Telecaster” Bill Kirchen, an extraordinary musician and super fun man. He invited Don Diego to play for few songs at Saxon Pub. Amazing stuff in Austin! • #austin #ameripolitan #billkirchen #dondiego #dondiegotrio #telecaster (presso The Saxon Pub)

After an extended hiatus, the weekly playlist is back. If you’re new here, I find new and recent indie country releases on Fridays, throw them in a playlist, listen to it over the weekend, edit accordingly and publish it for you to hear, share and enjoy.
It always starts off with something classic, as a nod to where we’ve been and ends with a track by Willie Nelson because I could probably make these for week in, week out for 20 years and never run out of songs.
While January is typically a slow month, it’s off to a pretty good start. About 2/3 was released in the last 30 days, which is all up front, and the last 1/3 is from Oct/Nov, when I last published a list. I’ve got couple irons in the fire right now regarding getting back on the air, but nothing completely baked yet. In the meantime, give this a listen and let me know what you like.
Huge week for new releases. After kicking it off with Sammi Smith (because why let Tyler get ALL the spotlight), the next 22 songs are either singles or tracks from new albums. Hat tip to Paige Plaisance for Song of the Week, with plenty of good stuff to follow
Of course, we have to pour one out for Charlie Robison who left us way too soon. The man could tell a story, that’s for dang sure.
Filling the rest of the show out with recent releases and ending with a Willie track from the upcoming bluegrass album. Pure coincidence that I ended the show with the original version last week.
Banger of a playlist this week.
Kicking it off with a classic from Connie Smith.
Eight brand new releases including Nightingale Rodeo, Tony Hannah, Lindsay Lou, Willi Carlisle and more.
In honor of Labor Day, a handful of protest songs.
Plus, lots of recent releases.
A bunch of artists making their playlist debut.

Enjoy!
Friends, the Ameripolitan Music Award nomination process ends today (Friday 9/22) and I’m submitting my name in the DJ category. If you can spare a minute, send an email to [email protected] that says Ameripolitan DJ: Don Sticksel, Both Kinds of Music KCHUNG Radio 1630 AM, Los Angeles.
If you don’t know what Ameripolitan is, it’s kind of like the country underground. Where honky tonk, rockabilly, western swing and outlaw music all intersect. Along with classic country, it’s what I play on my radio show.
Should you want to nominate others, I’ve included who I have on my ballot and a Spotify playlist I put together so you can hear whether you like any of them. Much obliged.
