Feed The Need in Austin, TX
I work for a non-profit, NAEYC accredited preschool in south Austin that serves primarily low income families. We were founded in 1941 as a war nursery, serving the children of women who were going to work in factories while their husbands fought overseas. 75% of our children still live with parents who qualify for income based child care subsidies. Many of our children are in foster care, many live across the street in a federal housing project, we serve teen parents, parents in recovery and single mothers trying to drag themselves out of poverty.
We provide loving, high quality early childhood care to children as young as 6 weeks old (because that's how long maternity leave is for employees at Target or Wendy's) and up to 5 years. Our families are often living in chronic stress, with parents working multiple jobs and shitty hours.
One of the things we're most proud of is our food program. Our one-woman-kitchen-show cranks out 89 breakfasts, lunches and afternoon snacks each day all made in house, from scratch in our little kitchen. We don't serve frozen chicken nuggets and fruit juice. Our menus have things like: curried chickpeas, three bean salad, vegetable soup, homemade oatmeal blueberry muffins. Don't get me wrong, there's an occasional string cheese, pita pizza or other child friendly processed product but we always make sure that our kids get great nutrition served family style in our little dining room.
From now until tomorrow at 6pm we are participating in a fundraising effort to raise money for our food program. $25 will feed a child 3 meals a day for a week. I'm asking you to help us feed these amazing kids.
