You know, as much as I refrain from commenting about American news, I'm kind of dismayed that I'm seeing people defend the American military? I mean, for the most part it's defending the right for trans folk to join the military, but it does require you to characterise joining the military as “service”, and, well, that's defending the military.

Like, I think I want to be clear here. I want trans folk in America to live. Donald Trump has said some evil things about trans folk, and to be honest, not only are they evil, they're wrong. Trans folk are brave for existing, are brave for surviving, and they need to continue existing and they need to continue surviving. All trans folk deserve life, liberty and the ability to pursue happiness, and not to feel like they're burdens, or difficult to accommodate, or that they don't belong.

I don't think they're particularly courageous for joining the military, though. Again. Trans folk are brave for surviving, yes, even if that means joining the military and taking that opportunity to transition, to get educated, to face risk in order to get ahead. But ipso facto joining the American military? No.

The American military is predatory, in that it takes advantage of the poor and disenfranchised, which includes trans, black and poor folk, in order to, well, hurt and kill other folk and advance American imperialism. And it's also pretty parsimonious in how much money it spends on the people who join it, yet wastes it on corrupt projects and weapons that do more harm than good, and pretty quick to abandon veterans once they become too inconvenient.

That Trump is doing this as a push to disenfranchise other LGBT folk? Well, he's been trying to do that to everyone since he got into office. This is the latest in the line of fuckery, and yes, it ought to be resisted, because failing here means failing at other points of the resistance.

But I think… it ought to be done for trans folk. Not for the military. Like, it's not as if holding the idea that “trans folk deserve to live” and “fuck the American military” are mutually exclusive.
