William Haines in 1930.

Haines is commonly known as the first Hollywood star to "come out of the closet." He led a successful career in the late 1920s and early 1930s as a contract player for MGM, appearing for three consecutive years in the Top Ten Money Making Stars Poll.

In 1933, he was arrested in a compromising position with a sailor in Los Angeles, and was given two choices by the studio head, Louis B. Mayer: a lavender marriage as a way to save face or the termination of his contract. Haines chose the latter, and was promptly fired from MGM. Thereafter, he starred in two additional movies produced by a "Poverty Row" studio, before officially retiring from acting in 1934.

Together with his sailor, Jimmie Shields, Haines then started a successful career as an interior designer. The couple stayed together for over forty years, until Haines' death in 1973. Joan Crawford once stated William and Jimmie were "the happiest married couple in Hollywood."
