The Problem With Writing Ancient Deities and Characters
We all love a good solid scary ancient deity right?
In my main WIP, there are creatures known as the Deis who influence the course of the story. Throughout history the Deis have been worshipped on/off as deities but in reality they're not gods, but rather a primordial species of semi-corporeal inter-dimensional sapient creatures, but even so.
Their ancient-ness makes them a great challenge to write (in my opinion.)
I have two in particular, both antagonists, one who features quite a bit in the story, the other who shows up more at the beginning and end.
Basically, I'm really struggling with this aspect of getting into their headspace and actually making them feel this old and believable, as well as pinning their motives down.
So, anyone else have something similar? What are the ways you've made these characters feel more impactful? How do you make them feel old, ancient, and on a different level of consciousness than your human characters?
Please share your experiences and thoughts!

Y'all ever look at statues of ancient deities and go "that's so gender"?! Like, why can't I have extra limbs, glowing eyes, and animal like features?!?!
a recent interaction with a friend on a post about toenails made me realize that I wouldn't last very long if I lived in a time with vengeful gods like ancient Greece/rome/Egypt/china/japan/Scandinavia/etc. bc im just too smartmouthed like amaroq said I don't want to offend the toenail gods like a normal godfearing person right and I was like what are they gonna do, take away my toenails, oh no like that's the attitude that would get me turned into an antelope at best and forever roll a boulder uphill at worst I mean any other time im not the biggest fan of living in the 21st century but at least I didn't live then because I wouldn't for long
Hey!
Which ancient deity (or combination of them) embodies you the most? Which is your favorite?
I’ve been researching about mythologies and found out about “Mayari”, a moon goddess from Tagalog mythology of the Philippines. How peculiar that ancient people have similar kinds of gods and goddesses.

“The Judge and Delicia Scones are both ancient immortal beings of immeasurable power. That’s why the Judge doesn’t have a name: he’s been a judge for so long he’s lost all need for one. Delicia is younger, so she still goes by her actual name.
Phoenix Wright, meanwhile, is also a baby of the same species. That’s why (1) his parents never come up - most ancient immortal beings of immeasurable power prefer to keep low profile; (2) he once pushed a man with one hand and knocked him on his ass, breaking his umbrella and also a cable; (3) he walks away from ridiculous life-threatening shit with a shrug, a mild cold and a sprained ankle. He’s got a long way to go before he reaches the Delicia levels of power, much less Judge levels of power, but he’s well on his way.”
(Thanks a bunch @lilietsblog! I really like your take on this! It’s really cool to think about, since it incorporates more of the supernatural part of the series. It also explains why the Judge never seems to age! Too cool! 😁)
713: Quetzalcoatl
Did a report on this handsome bugger way back in middle school, still as beautiful as I remember them.
