Ep7, Clip 1, "I Defended My Friends"
there’s something to be said about celebrities that have performed as protagonists in dystopian films or media that were fighting against genocide/ethnic cleansing/fascism and them choosing to support israel
like, there’s something intrinsically revealing of hollywood, western society, etc. when it’s boiled down
Vanitas wants to stay as himself as much as possible.
Of course he’d prefer to be completely human, as he was born as, but that’s no longer an option for him.
Moreau’s meddling and pursuit of a pseudo kin of the Blue Moon meant that he was not as human as before. That he’d been changed and not just in the ways he’d thought before with the torturous procedures.
Part of this disgust was probably due to his hatred of vampires, especially at this time in his life, but it also seems to have been due being forcibly changed.
Hence why he was resolute to remain as human as possible from that point forward. That even though it may kill him, he wanted to remain as himself.
But we all know how that worked out.
Because circumstances seem to have forced Vanitas to become Kin (despite his earlier wishes), Vanitas is being rewritten slowly from the inside out every time he uses the Mark’s power.
And it certainly doesn’t seem to be a painless process from how he kept clutching his arm.
So now Vanitas is being changed even more when he doesn’t want to but must to achieve his goals. But he still clings to what humanity he has left.
He introduces himself as an average human being.
He hides himself away, putting up walls and a grating, confident persona so no one really knows him.
He pushes people away both to protect them and protect himself.
And also so that no one else can change him. So that he can at least remain himself until the end.
But he is being changed.
Noé has gotten the closest to him out of everyone and has caused several changes in his attitude because Noé believes in him, encourages him, and supports him through thick and thin.
And that’s led him to do things he wouldn’t before and he knows it.
But there’s also everything with Jeanne as well where he has changed.
As the narrative has pointed out, it seems that Vanitas has genuinely fallen in love with her. But naturally, he wishes that he hasn’t.
I find it really interesting how Vanitas describes his feelings for her as if “being rewritten from the inside.” Considering he literally knows what that feels like and is currently experiencing that, it’s a particularly harsh comparison to make. And just as unwanted.
It could just be his self-loathing at play (as we see later in this scene) or just how abrupt this all hit him.
Because from what I know, while love can help you grow or see new ways of thinking, it shouldn’t completely change who you are as a person. Heck, if two people get together with one or both thinking they can change the other to how they thing they should be, that is usually a very bad sign.
And while Vanitas has changed a bit, with Noé helping him see new options and have hope and then Vanitas passing that on to Jeanne which makes her own feelings change, he’s still the same Vanitas we know and love. He still has those personas he hides behind even as the truth and his real self become more and more obvious to everyone who actually looks. He’s still him, even if he’s no longer fully human or slowly becomes something else.
That’s part of what Vanitas needs to learn. That’s he’s still him no matter what he is. That there are people who love him for who, not what, he is. That he can care for and be cared by others.
But still given all of these things in his past, you really can’t blame him for trying to cling to what he has left.
I made a 3am side blog dedicated to Bad Buddy and PatPran, but I can't even make clips properly on my phone T~T.
The analysis no one has asked for is back yo
This scene. This goddamn scene.
I swear I have heard and read so many times how people believe Yu to be this small ball of sunshine, kind hearted boy who would sell himself to EVERYONE to become their family.
Yes, he is kind. Yes, he does use the word family a lot but it’s the guilt of not having used that term the time he had the chance to, when he needed it the most and it has been weighing on him for so long the guilt has never stopped destroying him from the inside. You can’t forget that he is also greedy to be needed by others and loved by others so having more people to fight for is the only fire that lights his selfless depressed ass haha..........
So many times his words and intelligence are being underestimated, despite being shown in multiple occasions throughout the story how he does have priorities, he does use his smart brain to get through situation and to understand the people around him. He is very perceptive and observing towards those who surround him.
Yu is not an idiot, he is not just a naive cute boy.
He is determined to reach his goals, he is merciless and doesn’t forgive anyone who wants to hurt the people precious to him. He wants to believe in Asura, the same way he needed Asura he is aware Asura needed him as well but crossing that line did not end up well for him. The way Yuichiro’s behaviour changes in a split second the moment he feels betrayed by someone he gave his trust to and ended up trying to hurt his family; those are not the eyes of someone who’s in the mood for jokes, those are the eyes of someone who has made up his mind and is ready to take down anyone in his way. He pushes away any kind of tolerance and understanding, no more kindness and games.
He is determined to eliminate any enemy, friendly face or not.
There is no explainable reason to Yu for anyone who wants to bring harm to his precious family, he has said that multiple times that not only Mika and the kids were the first real reason to make him want to even be alive in the first place but how he would literally be ready to throw away the rest of the universe and himself for his family.
I just can’t stop stressing out how there is so much more, deeper traumas and desires and goals than just what it seems to be and I’ve always loved Yu not only for the way he has evolved chapter after chapter, how he doesn’t want to be some kind of good hero- his character is hella complex and dark, he has weaknesses, faults and greedy desires but more than anything a freaking awesome stubbornness and determination, his character is so rich and damn I can’t wait to see more of what the hell he is going to do now!!
