Don’t misunderstand. I am absolutely still looking at the responsible ‘adult’ jobs.
But my sister is at a game developer’s conference and has picked up some stuff about being a mo-cap actor for me, and now I’m suddenly contemplating what it takes to be a creature actor.
I just really like to entertain, okay. And I’m really, really good at scaring people.
I know I mentioned some of the scares I did last season. But I can’t recall if I mentioned that guests kept stopping the people running our haunt to ask if I was okay. People seemed to think I was genuinely dying.
Please realize that for most of the season I wasn’t covered in blood, nor was my costume.
...So somehow I sold the fact I was dying from day one with no blood. And guests complained the one day I wasn’t there.
It’s weird with scare acting. The silliest things can be absolutely horrifying if you commit to it and believe you’re terrifying. Because everyone else will believe it too. But it doesn’t matter how terrifying you look. If you don’t feel you’re scary, no one else will either.
Don’t get me wrong, the makeup 1000% helps. But you should be able to scare without it, or with it being done very, very poorly. The best work is done when you have a makeup artist and actor who can work together. But nothing will save an actor who doesn’t care or can’t get into the role.
